There was no flaw like that. You must have just missed the screen that prompted you to use a return already on your computer in order to transfer the previous year into the new return. With 2023 desktop, you had to click Start a new return, or "Begin" and then it would take you to the next screen where you could choose to transfer a return already on your computer, continue without transferring, or import a return from online TT.
I too will not buya download I will buy a H&R Block cd
@Keddins You can now buy an install CD for $10 after you buy a License Code for the version you want.

Please let us know if HR Block still has CDs.

H&R Block only has downloads for their 2024 tax preparation software.
If you want a CD from TurboTax you only need to purchase the 2024 download and have the license code, then for $10 you can also get a CD. See this TurboTax website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/
For all those trying to second guess me, I have been using Turbo Tax since 2000. I'm not confusing anything and know the difference between a download, CD, and preparing returns on line. The problem I related did in fact happen several years ago.
The Intuit person who responded to this query apparently has not been with the company long enough to know what issues previously existed. That person also made an incorrect assumption abouit where the data was stored. I do not store old data in the default folder. I organize all previous data in a separate file with subfiles for each year.
When I encountered the problem several years ago the program couldn't locate my old data and I had to re-enter it manually. I even called and spoke to a representative who told me that if the data wasn't in the default file, the program wouldn't find it. Nonetheless, the issue has been resolved and the new download version worked just fine as to finding my old data. I have no clue what year the fix was made, but I am satisified it now works and I would still recommend Turbo Tax to those who are skeptical about using the download version.
Had the same issue several years ago. The CD was sent to me but did not arrive. Was connected with someone at TT who advised me to set up a new account and desktop download. Establishing a new account was a nightmare. My guess is that my new account had no prior tax history nexus. Very bad experience that year. Back to CD following year. With TT help, was able to capture prior year info that following year. I feared I would have the same issue fo the 2024 returns, but after a few initial glitches, I believe 2023 info was rperly transferred. Should be ok going forward. If you have more tha one TT account # the key seems to be making sure you use the account number that syncs with 2023 history.
The point is not whether the download is the same as the CD. The issue is that it is important to have physical copies of old versions in case an amended return needs to be filed. Old versions must be repurchased if you only have the download code and Intuit decides not to honor the past purchase. This is already happening, so don't say that this is not an issue. Withholding the physical copy of the software is a total scam. I will be looking at other vendors even if they only offer downloads also. I've been a loyal Intuit customer for more than 25 years and I expected better. Shame on you for not providing your loyal customers with the service expected. Good luck with your new policies and extraordinarily high price points. Your prices for online downloads have convinced me to go to an H&R Block office instead of filing myself. Their prices are better than Intuit and I'll get in-person service.
I'm upset Turbo Tax lied o me. I called today (Monday 12/30/24 10:23 a.m. EST) and asked about the disc, and that I cant find anyone who sells the disc. The representative didn't tell me TurboTax discontinued the CD version.
Actually she gave me about 6-8 stores (Staples, Walmart, Sam's, Amazon,,etc) where I can buy the disc. It wasn't until I further search, and found this site where now explains why I can't find the disc; IT'S BEEN DISCOUNTIUNED. All this searching and 7 minutes on the phone with Turbo Tax, and no one could give me the correct answer.
If you just MUST have that piece of plastic, after you purchase the download and have your license key, you can purchase a CD for $10.

I can easily burn a CD on my own. This discussion is with respect to the basic principle of making the CD readily available and not double charging customers for past years versions. Very cute, but transparent price gouging. Why is it so difficult to get the purchase information on the CD? I'm clearly not the only unhappy customer. This is obviously an executive decision that only warrants an informative reply when Intuit risks losing customers. I'll still be looking at H&R Block. But, thank you for the information on how to purchase a physical CD. Regards, a former loyal customer.
For those who MUST have the piece of plastic: https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/
The difference is simple. With the CD I can go to my filing cabinet, get the CD, and have the tax program for the year I need. With the download I have to remember where I bought the download, then remember my password, re-download it. Much easier to have a disk.
I'm more upset they lied to me. I called TurboTax and their own representative informed me about 4-5 stores where I can purchase the disc. Each, and everyone they gave me I contacted and they all told me that don't sell the hard disc. It's not available.
@trentfields You can burn the installation file to a CD or save to a usb flash drive. But since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
Now you can buy an install CD for 2024 for $10 after you buy a License Code
https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021
But even if you have the CDs you won’t be able to reinstall 2020 or prior. They only support the last 3 years. And the License Code started in 2019. So 2019 and 2020 needs to connect to Turbo Tax to verify the License Code. But they only support the last 3 years. So you can’t install and activate 2020 and prior (then add a year going forward).
And if you do get 2018 and prior installed you won’t be able to update it or download any state programs. So you should save all your returns to a pdf file with all the worksheets. Open each year and save them now if you haven’t already.
Please! Please! Do no discount the turbo tax CD. I am 86 years old and I need to use the CD
@dlstoff You really should read more of this thread. We have put the information here multiple times. Although the initial purchase of the software is a download, if you really want a CD you can order one for an extra $10 after you purchase the desktop download and have your license key.
