Delete your 1099. If you entered your Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay as Other Income, you do not need an entry in the 1099 section.

  1. Type 1099-misc in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right
  2. Select Jump to 1099-misc
  3. On "1099-MISC Summary" delete your 1099

I'm not paying to upgrade. And it will not let me enter it any of the ways that are on here.

Yes, after entering the amount in the federal interview you will need to go to the MN state interview.  Click through the income section and you will be asked to enter your MN Frontline Pay to deduct it from MN taxable income.

Did any of you read the original question? You could have just not wasted everyone's time by saying, "you can't put in front line worker pay without us bilking you for $80 additional"  instead of repeating the same bad directions over and over that didn't answer the question.

You will need to pay to upgrade to Deluxe if reporting this income through your taxes. There's no way out of it, which sucks. I am paying $93 just to get the 1099 form added. Very upsetting.

Yeah, it does look like there’s no way around the deluxe upgrade.  I paid $83, and that’s with the automatic discount they gave me.  I think without any discount, it’s $113.

I just added to my AGI.. wasn't going to pay 78 dollars to upgrade.. ended up paying taxes on it for Minnesota but it was  less than the 78 dollar upgrade... hopefully the feds don't freak out about it lol

Yes,  there was a news release from the IRS asking taxpayers to hold off filing tax returns if there were rebates offered in certain states.  The agency is trying to determine if this is taxable income or not. The Minnesota Front Line Worker Pay was included in this news release.

You might find this article informative for future reference.

Unfortunately I already filed last weekend.. and had to pay $177 in order to do so all because of the form I needed to report that payment..

I entered my Frontline worker bonus without having to upgrade.

Thanks for that article.  I found one that talks about waiting to file in Minnesota:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/taxes/irs-says-mn-frontline-workers-should-hold-off-on-2022-taxes/ar...

Other sources don’t say anything about waiting, they just say that it is taxable on federal, as if it’s already been decided.

It’s probably best to wait until closer to April.  I just don’t like waiting that long to file and get my refund.  I’m already done anyway and if I have to amend later, it’s not a big deal.

Question:

If the IRS determines that it’s not taxable federally, will it no longer be required to mention it when filing for 2022,  or will it at least remove the need to use a 1099 that’s not included in the TurboTax Free Edition?

The IRS decision has been made on which state payments will be non-taxable.  You can click here for the decision and a table of state payments. The MN Frontline Worker payments are taxable on your federal return.

Payments from states provided as compensation to workers are includable in income for federal income tax purposes.

For reference here are the steps to enter the MN FWP as federally taxable and then exclude it from MN tax.

  1. Click "Wages & Income" in the left-hand menu
  2. Scroll down to "Less Common Income"
  3. "Show More"
  4. "Start" Miscellaneous Income
  5. Scroll to "Other Reportable Income"
  6. "Start"
  7. Enter "MN Frontline Pay" and the amount
  8. Continue to complete the topic interview
  9. Click "State" in the Left-hand menu
  10. Click "Your State Returns"
  11. Continue MN
  12. Click through to the page for the MN Frontline Pay
  13. Enter the same amount you entered in the federal interview
  14. Complete the state interview

I have re entered the 1099-misc form multiple times and have added the frontline worker pay to the MN state refund as the directions say to do. Every single time I get asked to review which prompts me to add the "Payers federal EIN." Am I missing something because this is getting incredible frustrating.
