Turbo Tax needs to QUIT telling people the only way to file 2018 is to mail!!! Shame on Turbo Tax!!! Go online and find an Authorized Tax Preparer and they WILL e-file 2018 for you!!!!! You don’t have to mail 2018 and wait months!!!!!!!!!

Can I wait until 2020 to file 2018 taxes?

Thanks so much! Do you know where exactly ? I’ve been searching for one online but can’t find one right now

The other poster was referring to *professional* software that paid professionals use.   No do-to-yourself software can e-file 2018 now.   Look in your phone book for a local professional.

You must visit them in person and physically sign a release to allow them to e-file.

@dru6666

Online preparation and e-filing for 2018 and 2019 and 2020 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2018, 2019 or 2020 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

Online is only for the current year.

How to prepare a prior year return

Or how to finish a return you started online

To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here,

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

Or If you have a simple return You can fill out the blank forms for free.

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Can I wait until 2020 to file 2018 taxes?

The 2018 return must be mailed (postmarked) by 4/15/2022  or the refund is forfeited ... do NOT wait until the last minute.
