Can I wait until 2020 to file 2018 taxes?

What should I put as my signature date?

The day I actually file them or should I prior date?

You enter the date that you sign the tax return.  If you signed the tax return today then you would enter May 4, 2020

Even if it’s the tax return for 2018?

Yes, if you are mailing the 2018 tax return in 2020 then you enter the date that is signed in 2020.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

On the IRS site you are also offered the use of an app called IRS2Go

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

@Children 15 You have multiple short posts that do not make clear exactly what you did or what you are trying to do.  You are asking about e-filing, stimulus checks, tax returns, etc.  We cannot really tell what you are asking about, since you have not provided details, and your posts have been added on to an already very long thread full of other users unrelated posts.  Could you ask some more complete clear questions to get the help you need?

One of your posts asks about 2018.  A 2018 return cannot be e-filed.  2018 has to be printed, signed and mailed.  AND----it had to be prepared using 2018 software.  You cannot use the online software program, which is ONLY for a 2019 return.

If you need to file a 2018 return:

Online preparation and e-filing for 2018 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

You also asked about filing a state return.  Yes you can file a state return if you need to file it.  A state return has nothing whatsoever to do with getting a stimulus check.

You are also asked how to check to see if an e-file went through---but we don't know what you e-filed.  If you e-filed a 2019 return, check your e-file status:

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

Or -

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2019 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

Yet another preparer giving misinformation to the consumer. THREE-YEARS PRIOR taxes CAN BE E-FILED BUT ONLY THROUGH A LICENSED AUTHORIZED E-FILE PROVIDER PER THE IRS WEBSITE. THE IRS HAS A DATABASE OF PROVIDERS WHO CAN E-FILE 2017, 2018 AND 2019. TELLING CONSUMERS THAT BACK TAXES MUST BE MAILED IS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE AS MAILING CAUSES SIGNIFICANT DELAYS. ESPECIALLY WITH THE PANDEMIC.  HR BLOCK TAX PRO AND OTHERS OFFER E-FILE FOR PRIOR THREE-YEARS. JUST BECAUSE TURBO DOESN'T OFFER E-FILING FOR PRIOR YEARS IS NO REASON TO PROVIDE MISINFORMATION. PLEASE VERIFY AND UPDATE THE CUSTOMER. THANKS!

TurboTax offers the Pro-Series software that can do that but professional software is rather costly unless you are in the business.
