New Hampshire

You know I hate when I get my money taken for no good reason.

I was trying to help my oldest daughter who is in college in New Hampshire. I know from our conversations that New Hampshire does not tax an individual's work income.  But with that in mind, I prepared her tax return. Federal went fine, took care of the home state (where she is a resident of), and since she had a job at college in New Hamphire, TurboTax suggested that I prepare a New Hampshire return and so I paid the $42 for the download and after the download was completed, it stated that I did not need to file in New Hampshire.... so I threw away $42 for nothing.. At least if I threw away $42 at junk food, I could enjoy some of it with regret later on and not instant regret like this. On this TurboTax was a sham.

Contact customer service and explain that you are not using the product purchased. See What is the Turbo Tax phone number?

I did as AmyC advised, thank you. Spoke with a helpful representative and she gave me the link to submit for a refund and the reason why I am requesting a refund. In the directions, it indicates that a refund is not guaranteed just because you ask for one. I did submit for a refund, but now when I check on the status of the refund it states that the case is closed but does not have a decision attached to it, so I do not know if it was approved or denied. Intuit should have something in the status besides closed, such as approved or denied. If it was denied, I can just move on and lesson learned. So I will wait. I did email the representative to see if she could let me know either way.

If you don't receive an update you should call again to follow up.  They will want to make sure you know the result.

  • Get in contact by leaving a message with our TurboTax or QuickBooks support team or chat with our Mint support team. In addition, the support page provides other resource links to other Intuit products. Finally, our customer support phone number is 1-800-4INTUIT (1-800-446-8848).

I emailed the representative last week, but I have not heard anything back. I tried calling customer service MULTIPLE times today and cannot get to a live person, only the automated system. I wish I could rate my experience with TurboTax right now, you would need a submarine to see the rating.

I did get my refund last night. I just wish that they (TurboTax) had better communication. Either a follow-up email or on the refund status, instead of just saying closed, it should state refund request approved and status closed or refund request denied, status closed.

My daughter moved to NH and worked a portion of 2022 in NH.  TurboTax says I need to complete the NH State Tax Form.  When I click to download, it asks a few questions to determine if a NH form has to be completed.  Based on her answers, a NH form is not required, and instead of a continue button (to purchase) it has an exit button and puts me back to State forms.  Unfortunately, it says I still need to complete a NH form.  Even though I went through the TurboTax process and it says the NH form was not needed.

How do I get out of the Twilight Zone?

I’m assuming you are using TurboTax CD/Download because you mentioned TurboTax is asking you to purchase New Hampshire.

Try a few things.

Delete New Hampshire. If you went through the New Hampshire section, TurboTax may still show it as unfinished.

  1. Tap File in the top left corner
  2. Select Remove State Return
  3. In the pop up box, highlight New Hampshire and select Remove
  4. Select the State Taxes tab, then tap Continue on “Let’s work on your state return”
  5. On “Your State Returns” tap Done with States

If New Hampshire was your daughter’s only state return, try bypassing State Taxes altogether by tapping Review.

New Hampshire has no income tax but a 5% tax is assessed on interest and dividend income.

Please note, recently enacted legislation phases out the Interest and Dividends (I&D) Tax starting at 4% for taxable periods ending on or after December 31, 2023, 3% for taxable periods ending on or after December 31, 2024, 2% for taxable periods ending on or after December 31, 2025, and 1% for taxable periods ending on or after December 31, 2026.

The I&D Tax is then repealed for taxable periods beginning after December 31, 2026.
