I erroneously put $0 paid in 4868. When I update amount paid w extension in amendment, TT doesn't calc refund (unless I enter as an estimated tax payment). How do I fix?

-I filed form 4868 in May 2020, and erroneously put $0 paid instead of the large amount I actually paid.  I did not catch this error (embarrassing)  before e-filing.
-I am amending my return to get a refund, but when I change "amount paid with extension" in TurboTax to the actual amount I paid, the amount of my tax/refund due does not change.  The only way I can get TT to calculate that I am now due a refund is to instead enter the amount I paid with my extension as an estimated tax payment.

How can I make TurboTax take into account the corrected amount I paid?

Amounts paid with a federal extension should be entered in Deductions & Credits > Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.

  1. Type estimated taxes in Search in the upper right
  2. Select Go to Estimated Tax Payments
  3. Scroll down to Payments with Extension
  4. START/REVISIT Payments with 2020 federal extension
  5. Enter your extension payment in the box 2020 federal taxes paid with extension

Thank you!  These are exactly the steps I followed before (and just tried again).  But when I change the amount paid with the 2020 extension from $0 to the (large) correct amount, Turbotax does not calculate a new amount of tax refund/due .  When go back to confirm that the extension payment amount is still there, I can see it, but the amount of tax due does not change.  If I instead enter a new estimated tax payment, TurboTax does then calculate a refund.  It seems like Turbotax is not "looking" at the amount put in the "paid with extension" data field.

Thanks,

Mike

@michael-boorstei  Hi Mike, sorry you are having an issue with TurboTax. It's hard to tell what's going on without looking at your tax data.

TurboTax may have locked your $0 extension payment. You can try deleting the Tax Payments Worksheet. This may clear your $0 and allow you to enter your actual payment. If you do this, you will have to re-enter any tax payments except for withholding on W-2s and 1099s.

Make a note of your federal and state refund/tax due boxes before doing this. Since you are clearing a $0 extension payment, the numbers should be the same after you delete the Tax Payments Worksheet. Otherwise you'll have to re-enter something.

  1. Click on Tax Tools in the left column
  2. Then Tools
  3. In the center box Tools Center, select Delete a Form
  4. Find Tax Payments Worksheet and DELETE
  5. Enter your actual extension payment and see whether it transfers over

The IRS usually catches this error and corrects it automatically but it takes a while ... no amendment is needed.

Unfortunately deleting the tax payments worksheet did not work, as Turbotax still does not calculate a refund when I re-enter the correct tax extension payment.   Is there any other way to get Turbotax to recognize the extension payment?  If I enter it as an estimated tax payment on the date I filed and paid the extension (which DOES cause a refund to be calculated), will this cause a problem with my tax form overall?

Thank you.

@michael-boorstei

You have to file on paper now, e-File is closed. You can get 1040 and Schedule 3 in fillable PDF form from the IRS website.

Enter the correct amounts on Schedule 3 line 9 and 1040 line 31.

Sounds like another bug in TurboTax 2020. There are many.

Sorry I missed that you already filed (embarrassing) .

IRS will refund your overpayment, probably in less time than it takes IRS to process a 1040-X.

So it is simplest to only wait for that .

BUT

if you insist, 1040-X.PDF is also on the IRS website.

Amounts paid with a federal extension should be entered in Deductions & Credits > Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.

  1. Type estimated taxes in Search in the upper right
  2. Select Go to Estimated Tax Payments
  3. Scroll down to Payments with Extension
  4. START/REVISIT Payments with 2020 federal extension
  5. Enter your extension payment in the box 2020 federal taxes paid with extension
