How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

I am FED UP with the nasty arrogance of Intuit dictating what browser  I am ALLOWED, what operating system I am ALLOWED--is there a  link where Intuit will BUY A NEW COMPUTER for me?  I am handicapped, on disability, I cannot run out and buy whatever they DICTATE.  Several years ago I was running W98SE, one year it refused to load, demanding I upgrade to XP.  I edited the registry and told it "presto you are now XP", and Turbotax installed and ran just fine.  Can I do a similar stunt and lie to the operating system and get past the arrogant ERROR TRAP to RUN WHAT I PAID FOR?!?!  I can't even afford the 2024 tax program, so I bought a 2023 verson.  Oh nooOOOoo, "you must BUY A NEW MACHINE that runs 64 bit os".  And (screw you) many of the programs I use WILL NOT RUN on a 64 bit system.  If Intuit will buy a computer for me, I'll just use it for turbotax and use the 32-bit I like for everything else.  Who do they think they are?

Suppose I borrow (or rent) a 64 bit system; can I install turbotax on a thumbdrive, then plug it into my 32 bit computer?  If it's a total solid concrete wall, could some wealthy billionaire SUE intuit for me and force them to SERVE THE CUSTOMER?  Business 101, "the customer is the boss".  Not if the company demands "oh you have to have the latest whistles and bells".  Also business 101 "the most useful for the most people" means if it works on a 32 bit system, IT WILL ALSO WORK ON A 64!  Total compatibility means more money; what sense does it do to lock out customers?  Just insane nasty arrogance.  I didn't choose for the teenager to turn in front of me point blank (and I T-boned and flipped his pickup), didn't choose to have an artificial vertebra and hobble around on canes, didn't choose to be POOR.  And I can't use the "online turbotax", never could get that to work.

I look forward to someone 'splainin' how to run 2023 on a 32 bit os, getting past the insane stupid arrogant error-trap-attitude, as I did when I ran XP-ONLY perfectly fine on W98SE.

Thanx in advance.

How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

I am going to suggest these steps below. I think you might be having an issue other users have experienced with installing when using Windows 10.

  1. Type "environment" in the windows search bar.
  2. This will bring up "Edit the System Environment Variables" as a match.
  3. Clicking on it takes you to the "Advanced" tab of a dialog box titled "System Properties."
  4. Near the bottom of the dialog box, click on the pushbutton labeled "Environment Variables...".
  5. This brings up a separate dialog box that shows the current values for user environment variables at the top and system variables at the bottom. In the list of user environment variables, you should see both TEMP and TMP, and their current values.
  6. Click on each, then click on the "Edit..." pushbutton.
  7. This brings up another dialog box in which you can change the "Variable value" to "C:\Temp" (be sure to change the variable value, not the variable name).
  8. This folder must, of course, exist for this step to work properly.
  9. OK out of all the dialog boxes and retry the install.
  10. Environment variable changes take effect immediately, so if this is the only change you make, it's not necessary to reboot.

How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

the system requirements for 2024 require a 64-bit operating system for any desktop version. There is no provision to install on a 32-bit system.  You can always use online.

if you think needing a 64-bit OS for 2024 is bad, Turbotax has announced it may not support desktops using Windows 10 for 2025.  Windows 11 64-bit may be required.

How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

The search didn't work.  Per another website I navigated:

Windows ⇒ settings ⇒ About ⇒ System info ⇒ Advanced System Settings ⇒ Environment Variables

I changed the entry on each from "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp", to "C:\Temp"

Clicked "okay"

Tried to reinstall, got:

We're unable to install TurboTax 2023 on your computer
Your computer's operating system doesn't support Turbo Tax 2023's minimum system requirements. You'll need to move to a 64 bit Windows operating system to use this version of Turbo Tax.

-------------------------------------------------

Total arrogant nasty attitude, "YOU WILL NEED TO MOVE TO A 64 BIT SYSTEM".  Right--will Intuit BUY one for me?!?!

How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

No. 2025 may even be worse because I got an announcement from Turbotax that Windows 10 may not be supported for 2025 and suggested converting to online. How many millions of W10 computer users will just dump Turbotax if they follow through?  How about Intuit's other products?

@Mike9241   Did you get an email about 2025 and Windows 10?  Or where did you see that?  I have Windows 10 also.

>the system requirements for 2024 require a 64-bit operating system

So installing it on a thumbdrive then trying to use the thumbdrive on a 32-bit system won't work?

That makes no sense!  Why would they LOCK OUT users?  Unless they were getting MONEY (under the table payoffs) from the os-provider.  What recourse do users have?  Hire lawyers, file suit?  Unlikely to win in court.  "He who pays lawyers the most, wins."

I've never been able to use the online version--if I can't get it to work, I'll go to the used-computer store and see if I can get a cheap W11-64b, then send the receipt to Intuit.

...and then SUE THEM when they refuse to pay.  Maybe an ad campaign:

INTUIT INJURES HANDICAPPED CUSTOMERS!  And they probably don't care about bad PR...

Sigh.

Just edit the registry ID value.  The installer has an "error-trap" that actually looks at the registry value, if it objects then it dumps the loader.  Change the value and it works fine.  At least, it did when I had W98SE; I changed it into "XP" (got the precise entry from someone else's XP computer), and it loaded just fine.  It did choke first run, missing a file; simply went to the internet and found the file, the XP-ONLY-TURBOTAX ran fine on 98SE.  I never changed the registry back, nothing else had a problem.

That's why I said "arrogant"--the program WOULD have worked, but it actually read the registry and decided to deny use.  Seriously bad attitude.

I was fairly sure a 64-bit program wouldn't run on a 32-bit system, architecture is different than just "W98/XP".  Was hoping I was wrong.

>How many millions of W10 computer users will just dump Turbotax

You would think the bottom line (profit!) would matter; but there has to be some motivation for forcing people to buy new operating systems.  I'm also fed up hearing, "IT'S ABOUT SECURITY".  No it's not.

Makes NO BUSINESS SENSE to have a belligerent attitude, just make it "the most useful for the most people".  Profits from sales will far exceed under-table kickbacks.

How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

All right, the 2024 tax software is installed on my Windows 10/32-bit machine, and seems to be working fine.  Except it's not importing last year's Turbotax file--last year I used Turbotax 2022.  And it's refusing to import that year.  Inconvenience, not fatal.  I have so little income it's just a matter of entering everything from scratch.  But I'm very grateful to be running the 2024 tax program without being forced to buy a new computer (which I wouldn't be able to do).

One reason for NOT using the "online turbotax program", I have no idea who would have access to my identity--it's bad enough we are forced to swallow REAL-ID, no more Fourth Amendment (we're under surveillance globally), no more Tenth Amendment, planet-wide risk of identity theft.  Can't cash checks, do banking or anything, "cannot buy or sell without the Real-ID".  Shouldn't be allowed.

When I downloaded Turbotax2023 I had to give a registration code--does anyone know how I can disengage the registration code so the software can be sold to someone else (who has a 64-bit OS)?

Thanx for everyone's help!

(BTW, to get the tax program to install and run on my 32-bit machine, I didn't use Intuit's product.  If I get my taxes done successfully, I may just throw a block party!)

How do I install 2023 Turbotax on Windows10, 32 bit?

@Gadgeteer   You can’t transfer from 2022 to the 2024 program.  Did you mean 2023?   You need to have the data file ending in .tax2023 on your computer to transfer into 2024.  It should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder.   If you have it saved somewhere else like in One Drive or on a backup first copy it to your C drive.  If you don’t have the actual .tax2023 file you may have the temporary file that starts with a Tilde ~ sign.   That’s incase your real file gets lost or corrupted.

Here's an idea.  Do you still have 2023 installed?  Try opening 2023 program and see if you can get your 2023 return to show up in it.  Go to FILE - OPEN.   Then save it again with a name and place you can find.  Go to File - Save As.  Then start a new 2024 return and transfer from the 2023 file.

Oh reading the rest of your post.   You didn’t use the 2023 program?  No you can’t deactivate the License Code to give to someone else.  The License Code is connected to you.  They will have to buy their own License Code.   And it is against the Terms of Use to sell it to anyone else.

>You can’t transfer from 2022 to the 2024 program.  Did you mean 2023?

No, I used 2022 Turbotax last year, and photoshopped each page into "2023".  My income is so low the taxable income is zero, figured it wouldn't matter using a year-old program.

>You need to have the data file ending in .tax2023 on your computer to transfer into 2024.

I thought of just changing the file name, but somehow it knows it is a "tax 2022" file.  I don't see why it refuses to accept a 2022 file, my name address and ssn don't often change, and the other entries are mostly the same (just different values).  It's not a big deal to re-enter stuff, just mildly annoying.

...I'm soooo grateful the competing product runs fine on this 32-bit computer.

Like I said, I did last year's taxes with 2022.  Made no sense to spend $50-$70 on a new program, when all it would get me is the $40 state sales tax refund.  I have always used brother-in-law's program, but they have disowned me so it's not an option.

2023 wouldn't install.  There is an "error-trap" on the installation that interrogates the registry, and if it fails OS number or bit-size it  just exits the installation.  That's why I called them "arrogant"; makes no sense to lock customers out, make it work for older computers and it is forwards compatible.  Bad business model.  When I was running W98SE I just changed the registry entry to XP and that satisfied the picky loader.  I didn't try changing the bit size flag, I figured variable calls would probably be different.  And I probably don't have a 64-bit machine to see what the flag is supposed to be.

I really appreciate the help here (especially yours), I wish more people were like you.

Well I hope your 2023 return was ok if you used the 2022 program.  Each year has a lot of differences,  like the Standard Deduction.   How did you get it into the 2023 foms?   Then did you mail it?

That's insanely stupid--I can't use the program, I'm out nearly 35 bucks.  I just didn't think to see if it said "32-bit".  I should have known based on experiencing the nasty attitude with the W98/XP.  I studied HR's product packaging, went to their website, it said nothing about 32 or 64 bit; but it said "requirements Windows 7, 8, 10, 11"---I was pretty sure it would work.  It works fine.  Cost me another 29 bucks, but much cheaper than Turbotax 2024!

(Sigh.)

If I can find a phone number to reach a real person I may call turbotax Monday and see if THEY can restore the license code.  But I bet there's no way to reach an actual person...

Thanx again...

I don't run a printer here, makes no sense to spend $40 on ink when it goes bad after a few months whether I print or not.  And I don't like printing dozens of useless pages (many have all entries as zero); so I copy each appropriate page as an IMAGE then paste them into a WORD document, and print it at Kinko's/Fedex (21¢ per page).  So before I put each page onto WORD, simple matter to open PAINT and make them say "2023".  IRS is usually 3 years behind in reviewing 1040's and sending letters, if they don't like my figures they'll get back to me; but I'm sure I still won't owe taxes.

I identify with the monkey in the poster, staring balefully at the viewer:

"Why is there always so much MONTH, left at the end of my MONEY?"

(Oh --- yes, I mailed it; it disappeared into the maw at the post office morning of the 15th.  I've tried to peer through the chute to see the postal monkeys responsible for throwing FRAGILE packages, but haven't seen them yet...)
