How do I add my spouses 1040 to my return? She is a resident alien for 2021 tax purposes.

To add your resident alien spouse to your tax return follow these steps:

1. Sign in to your TurboTax account if it is not open.
2. Select Personal info.
3. On the page Personal info summary select Edit on the line for Single.
4. On the page Let's confirm your marital status select married, Click continue.
5. Follow the prompts to enter your spouse's information.

The issue lies with the inability of finding where to input her 1040. There doesn’t seem to be any options anywhere to add a 1040, just w2 and the varying 1099s.

You cannot transfer another federal tax return Form 1040 from tax year 2020 to the current 2021 tax return where you have already transferred your 2020 tax data to the 2021 return.

This is my first year filing married let alone jointly. I am just very confused, sorry if I sound ignorant. It's her 2021 1040, her 2020 tax year was a 1040-NR. We want to file jointly, how would we do that if we can't add her 1040 for 2021?

If you are filing as Married Filing Joint this year, her 2020 1040 is not relevant.  You will need her 2021 W-2 to enter on your joint return.  The 1040 is the form that is filled out when you enter your information.

To do this in the personal info section, when asked your marital status you will need to choose married.  Then when asked how would you like to file, you will choose file a joint return.  

Once you start on the income section, after you enter your W-2, you will click add another W-2.  TurboTax will ask you who the W-2 belongs to, you will choose your wife. Then enter her W-2 as you normally would. 

If she had another type of income, other than income from a regular job, you would just enter it in the appropriate section and when asked who the income belonged to you will choose her if it's hers and you if its your or both if it belongs to both of you (meaning you both earned it).
