Filling out 1040-SR. Schedule 8812 was generated, and I don't know why.

I did that and it corrected the error but Form 8812 is still there.

Filling out 1040-SR. Schedule 8812 was generated, and I don't know why.

Form 8812 is for the Advanced Child Tax Credit that was given out to some taxpayers beginning in July 2021.   To reconcile this with the IRS, there is a question for everyone to answer as to whether or not you received the Advanced Child Tax Credit.   I am assuming since you are filing the 1040 SR you did not receive the Advanced Child Tax Credit.   The form will generate based on how you answered the question when you were answering questions.

Form 8812 will remain in the return.

That's the problem!  Again, not everyone is "presented" with this question in TurboTax!   Hence the "bug"!

It seems that unless you use the "interview" feature, this question is not obvious until you get to the review, and discover it remains to be responded to.  Again, not a bug, per se, but a definite programming oversight!

The same thing happened to me.  I think it's a glitch in Turbo Tax.

@CitizenJen

Everyone has to answer whether they received advance child tax credit payments.   If you did not receive any of those payments between July and December you need to answer that you did not receive any payments.

There are so many scenarios with those payments---like divorced/never married parents who have issues over who received the payments, who claimed the children, etc. --- the software has no way of knowing if any of that involves you---so you have to answer the questions about it.

Please follow these steps to indicate you did not receive any advanced payments:

  1. Click on the "Search" on the top and type "Child tax credit"
  2. Click on “Jump to Child Tax Credit”
  3. Continue through the questions until the "Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments" screen and select "No".
  4. Continue through the questions.

Yes, we understand that everyone has to answer this question, the issue is, since everyone has to answer, why isn't  presented to everyone????  I don't know how much more clear I can describe this bug/issue.

Since everyone must answer it, it should be presented by the software during the filing status and/or personal info sections, irrespective of either selecting the Interview or Explore on our own option!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again, I'm not sure how much more clear I can be on this.  We all understand that 1) it's now required, and 2) there is a manual process to address it, after going through the error check/review process; the latter being the crux of the problem!

Filling out 1040-SR. Schedule 8812 was generated, and I don't know why.

If you are claimed as a dependent or your income is so high the CTC is phased out then the CTC questions will not be presented since you are not eligible for the CTC in any fashion ... all others will need to answer 2 simple questions... not that big a deal.

Filling out 1040-SR. Schedule 8812 was generated, and I don't know why.

It's a big deal when you don't know you have to answer those questions, because the software does NOT lead you to them!  You have to first realize that you missed them, then go find them!  THAT is the issue!

We have never had child care or dependents. This question came up in the review as well, and demanded an entry. I put in 0 for myself and my wife. First question is why did it come up, and why do I have this form? Why is the form and question generated?

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

"Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021."

NO!  WRONG!  Even though it's apparently a new requirement, "everyone" is NOT being asked this question, at least not by TT software, hence the reason it's an issue!

All the TurboTax programs, online and desktop will ask this question for tax year 2021.

"All the TurboTax programs, online and desktop will ask this question for tax year 2021."

Again, WRONG!  At least not as of a month ago!  They do not all ask this question!  The software apparently only asks this question if you use the "guided" feature that takes you through everything!  However, once you fill out your personal information, and choose the explore on my own options, the question was NOT presented by the software until the error check routines, and by then, it's too late to skip the form!

Now, it's possible that in the month or so it's been since I've used the software, they have pushed out an update that corrects this oversight for most of us who do not use the 'guided' feature to go through every possible scenario.  Most of us who have used the software for years, go straight to the sections that apply to us, and this question is NOT presented!

Again, maybe this his been fixed in a recent update, but as of last month, this question was absolutely, positively, NOT presented to the majority of TT users who choose not to go through the lengthy guided tour process!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm not sure how I can make this any more clear????

@Gunslinger4u

Just completed a 2021 tax return using the Premier desktop edition.  Filing as Single, no dependents and did not use any of the guided processes or Walk Me Through Everything.  In Federal Review it shows one error that needs to be corrected.  The program requires a entry in the Schedule 8812 for the advance child tax credit.

See screenshot.  No need to continue this conversation.

I already acknowledged that it takes the error check routine to catch the fact that this question was not presented during the normal course of entering data!  Thanks for affirming my point!  😉

Oh, and since the software takes you to the form as a result of the error check, the form is now included, when it need not be if you return to the interview portion (manually) and address it there!  That's what I did, and it eliminated the error, and the form.  But only AFTER I went back and fount it.

So, my point stands, the question is NOT presented to all TT users until it pops up as an ERROR.
