Filling out 1040-SR. Schedule 8812 was generated, and I don't know why.

#1, no dependents entered

#2, even when entered 0, it repeats and the error is unresolved. It MUST be a bug in your app.

Please help resolve it ASAP.

If you're using TurboTax Online, delete Form 8812 from your return, close TurboTax, clear your Cache and Cookies and then open TurboTax.

If everything else in your return is correct, don't run the Smart Check again.

Thanks. The steps indicated here were the most direct. Followed the steps and ran Smart Check successfully. Irks me that I was required to go through the update of a section that I had no reason to access.

I agree!

I don't know if this is unique to the download / CD purchase versions or not, but that's what I had to go through, and why I think TT could better handle providing this question upfront, instead of waiting to catch it in an error check routine, and having to go to the form itself.

Agreed ... the method the program uses is not the best but since this was for one tax year only they were not going to reinvent the wheel.

Had same problem but correcting to zero dependents would not resolve. Went to FORMS (top right of page), scrolled down to Schedule 8812 and deleted the form. This corrected the return.

My experience is more like the ones below who can't get rid of 8812 no matter what they try.

Everyone has to answer whether they received advance child tax credit payments.   If you did not receive any of those payments between July and December you need to answer that you did not receive any payments.

There are so many scenarios with those payments---like divorced/never married parents who have issues over who received the payments, who claimed the children, etc. --- the software has no way of knowing if any of that involves you---so you have to answer the questions about it.

Please follow these steps to indicate you did not receive any advanced payments:

  1. Click on the "Search" on the top and type "Child tax credit"
  2. Click on “Jump to Child Tax Credit”
  3. Continue through the questions until the "Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments" screen and select "No".
  4. Continue through the questions.

I did not indicate that I had any dependents. It is asking me to fill out form 8812.

I got the answer in the first of the four pages of posts. I didn't read through all the rest, just the last page. At the risk of repeating something in the others, I see the problem as simple. If you don't itemize, you'll never encounter the interview page where you answer no. Programmers have to put the question in personal info or find some other workaround to avoid tripping up people taking the standard deduction. I've seen other threads in this community on this issue. It's a fault Turbotax has to fix.
