Filing an extension for 2019

To file an extension:

Keep in mind: An extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes — but it will keep you from getting a late filing penalty. (You'll still owe interest if you pay after the deadline).

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Online. (To do this, sign in to TurboTax and select Pick up where you left off).
  2. Select File an extension at the bottom of the column on the left side of the screen.
    • If you don't see the File an extension button in Step 2 above, search for extend in the upper right and select the Jump to link at the top of your search results.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to e-file your extension.

Note: If you're paying additional taxes owed with direct debit, you'll need to provide your 2018 AGI for verification purposes (if you didn't file a 2018 return, enter 0 as your AGI).

If you don't have your AGI, or your extension gets rejected for the wrong AGI, here are 2 options:

  1. Recommended: Pay your taxes at IRS Direct Pay (this also automatically gives you an extension).
  2. Download and print Form 4868, fill it out, and get it postmarked before 11:59 p.m. July 15. Payment and mailing instructions are on pages 3 and 4 of your printout.

If you filed prior to the deadline, but were rejected, you have until July 20 to mail in your extension.

Filing an extension for 2019

If I file for an extension and I owe roughly 1000$. I was assuming the IRS would still take the money on 7/15/2020, but they have not.

Or does the IRS only take money at the time I actually file my federal taxes, so for instance if I file 08/15/2020, I will owe roughly $1000 + (payment penalty and interest for 1 month)?

I'm asking because the IRS did not take money on 07/15/2020, and I want to know if I incorrectly did something.

The deadline for filing an extension was July 15.  Complete and file your tax return as soon as possible if you have taxes owed.  The failure to pay penalty and interest owed on the unpaid taxes continues to accrue.

@mullerc2

When you filed the extension did you explicitly request the payment to happen ?  If you did it can take several days for the IRS to catch up with the pile that was filed on last day.

If you did not request the debit correctly you can make a payment now on the IRS web site to stop the late payment penalties and interest from accruing ... then when you finally file the payment will be accounted for as a payment with extension.

it's too late to file an extension for 2019. if you are due a refund the should be no penalties for filing late. if you owe and didn't pay by 7/15/2020 (federal - states are different) file and pay as soon as possible. you are 4 months late so the penalty on the unpaid taxes is 20% + interest let it go another month an additional 5% penalty and interest

You have posted several times in the forum seeking help, but your posts are so short that it is difficult for us to discern what your problem really is.   Earlier you posted about what seemed to be saying your return was not filed.  Now you are posting to a thread about extensions.  It is way too late to get an extension if your tax return was not filed on time.  If you want help, please use some complete sentences and explain your issue in detail.  Click "Reply" in one of your existing threads and give us some details.

@evette19800   EDD from California?  Did you file a 2019 federal return?

Sorry, Online for 2019 and prior is closed now so you can not start a new 2019 or 2018 return or finish one. Online is only for 2020. Oct 15, was the last day to efile.  2019 is now the prior year.

Did you start an Online return? How to finish a prior year online return

Or How to file a prior year

You can only buy the download for prior years. You have to buy a separate program for each year. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on. Buy the download here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.

Important! Mail Federal and State in separate envelopes and mail each year in separate envelopes.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. You have 3 years to file for a refund. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

If you want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms…..

Here is the IRS 2019 Form 1040
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2019.pdf

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s--2019.pdf

And 2019 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2019.pdf

2019 Tax and EIC Tables
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040tt--2019.pdf

Sch 1 : https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s1--2019.pdf
Sch 2 : https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s2--2019.pdf
Sch 3 : https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s3--2019.pdf
Then when you do file 2020 enter 0 for the 2019 AGI since you are filing 2019 late.

Or get the blank state returns from your state website.
