Issue is the State file has an update and will not show until Federal is filed.

Fix: E-file federal first by itself then go thru the rest of the prompts and until you get to close TurboTax.

reopen turbo tax and click on state tax. TurboTax will see an update for the state and prompt to install.

Install update for state and find your way back to e-file and now the state tax will now send and complete with e-file.

Sorry instructions are not turn by turn. Sending e-file federal separately worked for me. Hope this helps you.

I am having the same issues, purchased from Amazon, receiving error message " error tailed validation = - there is an update available for your version on turbo tax before you can file electronically you'll need to get this update.  To do this go to the online menu and select check for updates.  I have done this several times with no fix

Thanks for your note. My post is from a year ago, though, I didn't realize that the same problem is recurring this year. I am yet to buy this year's software, and will choose where I buy from.

Yes, you can file your Federal and State separately, here's detailed info on Filing Federal and State Returns Separately.

Here's how to to a Manual Update that may resolve your state issue, unless you're waiting for State Forms to be ready.

Can you clarify if you have tried the manual updated provided by MarilynG1?  There is a way to manually update your TurboTax software.  Per TurboTax, "If you're having trouble updating your TurboTax 2024 for Windows Individual software using the "Check for Updates" method, here are instructions for how you can get the latest federal program update:

1. Close TurboTax and all other programs except this browser window.
2. Select this link to download the 319 MB update.
3. Save the update file to your Windows desktop.
4. Double-click the update file w_perrelsuperpatch... on your desktop to install the manual update."

I am having the same issue on Windows -- My Turbox Home & Business purchased directly from Intuit Turbotax says Failed_Validation updates needed.  BUT when I do a check for updates, the response is Updates are Current. FIX THIS PLEASE!

The 'super patch' worked only to efile Federal.  Am still getting "Failed to validate" when trying to efile my CA state returns.

the process was delete the current 2024 TurboTax on your computer

restart your computer

download the current version of your program using the link below and install

restart your computer again

then download and use the super patch program 

then for me it all worked
