I submitted my 2023 return with turbotax desktop. I need to amend it, so I open the 2023 desktop app and choose to amend and go through the steps. When everything is updated and I try to e-file, I get an error saying:
Your Transmission Didn't Go Through
TurboTax was unable to send your return to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center, for the following reason:
Transmission failed: the intuit filing electronic center is close for 2023 personal income tax filing season. October 31 2024 was the last day to file your returns electronically.
I'm confused, because everywhere I read says you should be able to e-file the 2 previous tax years. Is there a way to e-file using turbotax? For example, it says NY state I have to e-file but the software won't let me.

A 2023 tax return or a 2023 amended tax return can only be printed and mailed using TurboTax, it cannot be e-filed.

Oh that's rough. Thanks for the quick reply.
FYI I was able to get my 2023 amended efiled to state but wouldn't to federal after federal rejection came back to correct on desktop version. Now I can't get my correct desktop version file (.file2023) to integrate back into the TT system. Frustrating.
Yes, you can transfer your 2023 Amended Return into your TurboTax Desktop program for 2024. Try renaming the Amended File to Amended.tax2023 and using BROWSE to point to that file on your computer.
Here's info on Transferring a Prior Year Return.

@ct222 I think efiling my state amended return worked too - but I didnt actually get an email confirmation like I normally do when submitting my returns with turbotax. Did you get one? Turbotax does say "accepted" when I check in the file tab.
Yes, I did get an email confirmation of state acceptance as well as the green check "accepted" online.
Thanks. Good to know desktop can accept amended return data 2023 to integrate into 2024 version.
I however, already purchased online Turboxtax 2024; will see if I can cancel and get refund before moving to desktop.
You can transfer the 2023 amended return from your computer into the 2024 Online version. You need to have the .tax2023 amended file on your computer.
How to transfer into Turbo Tax Online, including from a pdf file or other software or from the Desktop program
Go to Tax Tools > Tools > Transfer from your computer > Continue.
Oh you already paid for Online version? Did you already start 2024 Online? Why or how did you pay for Online before filing? If you paid for the 2024 Online return you won’t be able to clear it to transfer from the .tax2023 file on your computer. You can call in and ask them to put the Desktop download in your account so you can switch since you paid for Online.
Yes 2024 online I have finished and needed to see if the changes from my amended 2023 were reflected on form 8606 which are not visible until you pay. I checked them and they are not correct; hence the need to get 2023 amended file integrated into the system.
Contact support and request the desktop version for 2024. @ct222
Thank you. Did that and spend 1.5 hours on the phone trying to do that and they were unable to do that but instead offered to refund the purchase. Still awaiting confirmation that that has happened. Will purchase 2024 desktop separately after refund comes through.
Let's back up. You can not "integrate" your amended 2023 return into your existing 2024 return. The only thing you can do is start a brand new empty 2024 return and transfer the amended 2023 into it to start over. You can use either the Online version or the Desktop program for 2024.
If you don't want to start completely over, you will have to manually enter any changes from 2023 into your 2024 return one by one.
I don't see that switching to the Desktop program will help you.
