Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

I hope TT people who have this knowledge in the TT 2023 software can clarify exactly how this family sharing thing works.

Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

When you use desktop software (the CD/download) your own tax file is only stored on your own hard drive.  Your tax return is not stored in an online account.  No one can see your tax return by going to the online account you would use for just downloading the software.   And...even if you share the same computer with a family member, you can always password protect your tax file so that no one else can look at it.

That is correct until efiling so my point is about efiling. If you're not doing efiling, that is ok and everything is stored on your computer locally.

So, you meant family members can do their efilings in their own TT accounts or they have to use the original owner's TT account but still no tax detail is visible in the account other than the efiling history?

E-filing  from desktop software does not put your tax return online into your online account.   Only tax returns prepared using online software are stored online.   If you use the CD/download no one else can access your tax return.  It is only stored on your own hard drive or any back up device you use like a flash drive.

You just have to log into the same account to INSTALL the program.  You should be able to efile with each person's account.  And even if you use the same account to efile no one can see any other returns or history done on the Desktop program.  The returns are only kept on the computer that filed it and in a separate file, even if you efile though Turbo Tax .

Using the same account to install the product is fine since it's just a one time thing.

Being able to do efiling using family members' individual TT accounts is great. Are you sure about this since that's not what I heard? If so, that would be perfect.

Once TurboTax is installed, when you open the program, you are asked to Register your account by filling out a form.

So each person using the program registers and Efiles separately.   This would apply even if several people are using the program on the same computer, as each person 'starts a new return' and has a separate registration.

You don't need a User ID and Password to prepare/efile a return in TurboTax Desktop. Your TurboTax Account is not being accessed.

Here's more info about Installing TurboTax on more than one computer.

This is false information. If you log into to Intuit then TurboTax online via the web, you can download a copy of your return that was created by the desktop version in a previous year. I did it. So the comment “not stored in an online account” is completely false.

Sorry----you are mistaken.   Returns prepared using the CD/download are NEVER stored in your online TT account.  They are on your own hard drive or whatever backup you used like a flash drive or external hard drive.  If you found a return in an online TT account, you prepared that return using online software and forgot that you used online for that year.       No way a return prepared using the desktop software got stored in your online TT account.

Incorrect. I used desktop version last year and was able to download it from the web/online account, today. It’s in a different section than the ‘left hand menu: tax documents’. So the information is stored online regardless of which online or desktop version you use. Here’s how I found it. Log in to TurboTax, under “Tax Home” on left side, start a new return and answer only a few questions, once it is started, scroll to the bottom, you will see “Your account” and then “Your tax returns & documents”. There in that documents folder, I found a copy of the desktop return I filed last year. Strangely, the return was not in the other section I mentioned before. Hope this helps.

If you thought you used the CD/download and then found the return online, another possibility is you made a mistake when you prepared the return.  We see a lot of users who purchase the CD/download and then by mistake, they log on to their online TT account and use it to prepare the return without realizing they are not using their CD/download software.  Usually they figure it out when the program asks for payment.   That is when they end up in the user forum and we tell them how to switch from online to the desktop software they already paid for.

Or you might have uploaded a copy of your return from your computer to the My Doc section of online for storage.   But you shouldn't be using or in an Online account if you hare  using the Desktop program.

Or you are thinking of when you installed the Desktop program you could have downloaded it from Online instead of using the CD.

Guessing what I did is not helpful when I spelled out the steps. I did not upload anything last year when I used the desktop version last year. I don’t understand your second sentence. What I am saying is that I came across my previous desktop return in my online account. Therefore, desktop returns are available online. The reply that they are not is misleading and I am sharing what I discovered. Please re-read my post. Hope this helps.
