Tennessee does not have a personal income tax. Leave boxes 15, 16 and 17 blank (empty) when entering your W-2
If the program still requires an entry then delete the W-2 and re-enter the W-2 manually to clear the error.
Several states do not have a state income tax. So these states will not show up in certain drop down lists. Leave boxes 15, 16, and 17 blank when you enter a W-2 for these states.
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming
What did not help? Are you talking about entering your W2 on the federal section?
If so, you will need to leave box 15 through 17 completely blank since TN does not have a state tax. Do NOT enter a state payer number or anything else in those boxes. You can then hit continue. When you continue through it may ask you if you want to enter anything for the state, just say no or skip or hit continue. If you enter anything regarding the state it will cause an error. There is no need to enter anything at all for TN.
I live in Alabama and I am required to report TN income. My W-2 has TN on it. Why can I not just enter TN?
Nine states — AK, FL, NV, SD, TN, TX, and WY — levy no state income tax. Leave boxes 15 thru 20 blank (empty) on the TurboTax W-2.
If I leave it blank, Alabama rejects my return. I will say again, why can’t I enter TN. Seems like some software developers are not listening to users.
What is the rejection message? Quote all of it exactly. Why AL rejection?
I am not taking time to type out the complete error message and Turbo Tax will not allow me to copy the text. It starts with Total Alabama Wages Form 40 Pg. 1 line 5... The advice from TurboTax is to confirm I have correctly entered Boxes 15-17 on my W-2. My W-2 shows boxes 15-17 correctly but TurboTax will not allow me to enter TN in Box 15 the way it is entered on my W-2.
@gturner21 You should not be entering TN for a W-2 in any way or in any box for a W-2.

For anyone else that runs into this same problem, the way to enter TN for the state on the W-2 so that Alabama will accept your electronic submittal, skip the step-by-step part that is why we pay for Turbo Tax and go to Forms and enter TN on the W-2.
Since none of the idiots on the 10+ times this was posted, ever answered the question with an actual solution, I will try to give you what worked for me. Right below that in the box that has a trash can symbol at the end, just click it. And it stops giving you that error. Hope this helps.
