Why is my medical expense different than what I entered for 2019-2021? When I physically add what I entered, it is different than what Turbo tax says it is. HELP!

For example, in 2021 I add my entries up to be $28575.00 plus $283.00 for mileage.  According to Turbo Tax I entered $35182.00.  Can someone explain?

Did you buy health insurance from the Marketplace exchange? Or have to pay back the subsidy? If you went to an exchange for Health Insurance, and had to pay back some of the subsidy, part of the adjustment will flow to Schedule A.

If you get Social Security benefits the medicare deduction on your SSA-1099 will flow to Schedule A.

To check Medical expenses just start typing Medical in the search box at the top of your return and pick "medical expenses, sch a" from the drop down list. Then click on Jump To at the top of the list.

OR
Enter Medical under
Federal Taxes Tab or Personal (for H&B/Self Employed version)
Deductions and Credits
Choose Jump to Full List -or I'll choose what I work on
Then scroll way down to Medical
Then Medical Expenses - click Start or Update

Do you receive Social Security benefits and have Medicare premiums deducted from your Social Security payments? TurboTax automatically adds the Medicare premiums on your Form SSA-1099 to your medical expenses. (You should enter the premiums only in the SSA-1099. You should not enter them under medical expenses.)

Did you claim the self-employed health insurance deduction? If you could not claim the full amount as self-employed health insurance because your net self-employment income was too low, TurboTax automatically adds the excess to the medical expenses on Schedule A.

Obviously these are just guesses because we cannot see your tax returns, but they are common situations where something is added to your medical expenses that you did not enter directly.

When you say "According to Turbo Tax I entered $35182.00," where exactly do you see that amount in TurboTax? On your 2021 tax return, what is the exact amount on Schedule A line 1?

If you receive Social Security benefits, your Medicare is deducted from your SS.   When you enter the SSA1099 for your Social Security, the amount paid for Medicare flows automatically to the medical expense section of the software, so do not enter it again.

MEDICAL EXPENSES

The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.)  expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2021—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding.  Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.

To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses

When you entered in the 1095-A the part of the premium you paid was automatically sent to the Sch A so you should not have added it again ... also when you entered in the medical miles the program would have done the math for you so that may also be your issue.

Save the  return as a PDF and  review the Sch A worksheets.

If you have filed your federal tax return and it has been accepted by the IRS -

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.

Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets
