Here are some of the limitations to Itemized deductions
You apparently have a different version of TurboTax than I do. When I get to Medical there is no down arrow key. Besides that, I understand about the threshold for medical deductions. But it appears that TurboTax has already made the decision that standard deduction is best and won't let me add additional expenses. In past years I have been able to add expenses as I find them. I could come back to the medical expenses often and update at will. I did go to the forms section and found the medical expense worksheet. I was able to add the additional expenses in the worksheet. I'm hoping that it processed properly. It appears that TurboTax has an error in its Step-by-step section of the program not allowing updates to expenses.
Select Online, check for updates. You should be able to come back and update as desired - that has not changed on our side. You have forms mode which means desktop version. Since you are not able to update expenses, you should check for program updates.
The medical worksheet in forms mode is also fine. You can see your worksheet and the Sch A to know where you stand.
After the software update, return to federal deductions and credits, scroll down to medical and update. If this still does not work, check for software updates again. Sometimes there are quite a few updates to be made.
Thanks for the reply and the attempt to help. I do have a desktop version and I did update after I noticed the problem. I went ahead and updated again this morning and still the same message appears. At least I could get in and add the additional medical expenses directly on the form. I hesitate to say it's a programming error if I'm the only one having the problem. Having used your TurboTax for 35 years, I find it a very reliable program. Could very well be user error but I can't figure out what I would be doing wrong?
I would continue updating the software because I trust that you understand the program. You have a workable solution but I agree you should be able to get into the medical area directly. There are no known issues with that area.
OK thanks. Feels silly to keep doing the same thing and expect different results ... but I did again this morning. And got same result.
@vap1 , I keep seeing the same issue. It's not just you. At least I can add it to the Medical Expenses Worksheet. But I hope the bug gets fixed for us desktop users.
Yes, you should be able to add Medical Expenses through the interview section.
Try a Manual Update, or uninstall/re-install. Are you experiencing issues in other areas of the program? Here's more info on Troubleshooting TurboTax Desktop Issues.
Windows or MAC??
I know that for the Windows software, that transferring in a file from last year...if that file had any Supporting Details (SD) worksheets in it, those SD sheets would block access to certain areas.
Not sure about the Medical Expenses area, but if entering Social Security benefits on a SSA-1099, the step-by-step doesn't allow you into it if there was an SD worksheet used in it last year (at least for the box 5 $$ amount..not sure about the others), except by entering data directly on the SS Benefits worksheet in Forms Mode.
.....even after all these updates for everything else, it STILL isn't fixed (and I just tried it again with a re-transfer from a test 2023 file). So, apparently TTX is ignoring the issue while fixing all the other chaotic changes they made for 2024....BAH!!!
Medical portion of TurboTax questionnaire was definitely a pain-point for me, too (downloaded desktop software on 4/4/25; made multiple update requests to ensure I had the latest). Seems to be the same problem addressed by OP.
From what I can determine, the problem emanates from the screen asking about meeting the threshold for medical expenses. If you respond "No", but then later want to adjust that response, there's no pathway in the interview process available for returning to and revising the response to that question. It merely walks you through a few previously answered questions, then proceeds to the "Thanks, we got all your Medical Expense info ..." screen response that other users have been encountering.
My only workaround? Restarting the whole return - basically a wasted Saturday afternoon. (I like the option, but I generally avoid making manual entries/overrides to the form.) I also had a few other disappointments with the questionnaire flow that I won't address here. TurboTax user for 25+ years.
I have the same issue and I am on the online version. I need to update medical expenses, and none of the options above work, I continue to get the same prompt that prohibits me from entering medical expenses. Help please
@Jane44, I haven't used the online version. Does it allow you to manually enter amounts on the Medical Expenses Worksheet for Schedule A?
