If at any time on or after July 20, 2022, a taxpayer has an unborn child (or children) with a detectable human heartbeat, the taxpayer may claim a dependent personal exemption in the amount of $3,000 for each unborn child.

Enter the total number of dependents. Do not include yourself or your spouse or dependent unborn children. A dependent is determined in the same manner as was determined when dependents were allowed for Federal income tax purposes except that a dependent also includes those unborn with a detectable human heartbeat.

Note: The unborn dependent exemption cannot be claimed if the child is born during the same tax year.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the State section.
  2. Delete Georgia
  3. Sign out of your account and sign back in.
  4. Go to the State Section and add Georgia.
  5. Continue to you get to the screen “Here’s the income that Georgia handles differently”
  6. Scroll down to “Miscellaneous.”
  7. Start “Dependent Personal Exemption for Unborn Children.”
  8. Enter -1- in Number of Unborn Children.
  9. Click Continue.

Thank you, I have tried deleting and re-entering under the Georgia state section. After I choose 1 and hit continue it doesn’t calculate the $3000 at the finished page.

Why am I not receiving the unborn child tax credit after selecting it under GA return. Once I hit done it doesn’t show up, even though the previous screen shows $3000?

Hi Ms. Shirlyn,

I am also having this problem when I add the Dependent Exemption for Unborn Children.

Token number : 1091557

Please advise. Thank you!

Why am I not receiving the unborn child tax credit after selecting it under GA return. Once I hit done it doesn’t show up, even though the previous screen shows $3000?

I am sorry for your loss. I reviewed the sanitized file from Token 1091557. TurboTax did apply the 3000 UNBORNDEP credit to your Georgia state tax return. The credit is on Schedule 1 line 14, as a negative 3000 (-3000). TurboTax transferred the -3000 to line 9 page 2 of Form 500.

Thank you for your service.

If at any time on or after July 20, 2022, a Georgia taxpayer has an unborn child (or children) with a detectable human heartbeat, the taxpayer may claim a dependent personal exemption in the amount of $3,000 for each unborn child.

I have reviewed your token and you have entered the information in the correct place. This benefit on the Georgia return is not a non-refundable tax credit that would apply directly against your tax liability, or a refundable tax credit which could be added to your refund.

This is a personal exemption.  We used to have personal exemptions on the federal returns, until 2018 when the tax legislation ended them. This Georgia exemption gives a deduction from the income, so you you will not have to pay state tax on $3000 of your income.

You will find this on the Georgia Schedule 1, Line 12 and then on the Georgia Form 500, Line 9 when you review your return before filing.

I am sorry for your loss. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Why am I not receiving the unborn child tax credit after selecting it under GA return. Once I hit done it doesn’t show up, even though the previous screen shows $3000?

Good Evening Teresa,

I am adding (2) Unborn Children (twins) onto my 2023 tax bill to utilize the $6000 personal exemption, however when I am reviewing my 'taxable income', I do not see the $6k deducted from that amount. I've taken the 'standard deduction' for being married of $25,900 as well as a $300 educator expense. I would expect to see the $6k there as well.

Can you help verify this or explain where the $6k is being applied? My Token: 1115683.

Thank you for your time,

The $6K is being applied.   Look on your Georgia Schedule 1, Lines 12, 13, and 14.   This amount is transferred to page 2 of your Georgia Form 500, Line 9.   You will only see the subtraction on the Georgia return, not the federal return.    I think you are looking at your federal return instead of the Georgia return.   @Georgia_Resident

Hello Teresa,

I claimed an unborn child on my taxes and on Line 7b I only see the number 1 for dependents but I don’t see the credit.

The amount that you get for claiming an unborn child on the Georgia return, isn't a credit, but a personal exemption amount. Once the amount is shown on line 7b of the Georgia Form 500, it gets added to the personal exemptions on line 7c. ‌The amount on line 7c is carried to line 14 and multiplied by $4,000 to calculate your personal exemption amount.

The personal exemption is used to reduce your taxable income. Each exemption reduces your tax by $4,000.

To claim the exemption in TurboTax:

  1. Go to your state return
  2. On the screen of Here's the income that Georgia handles differently, scroll down to the Miscellaneous Section
  3. Select Start next to Dependent Personal Exemption for Unborn Children
  4. Enter the number of unborn children
