I'm using the email button to reply by email. I see no chat icon. -ajwest- I still do not see the problem I reported as well as did others, and saw a display page on my laptop that indicated the Auto Registration charge for both my autos appear in the TY 2021 worksheet, but it never updated the summary level tier which is atill blank... -aj-
Nope I do not fool around with a freeie version of TT online....I purchase the CD and always use this version from Staples. -aj-
Has anyone else read my last post? -aj-
The real issue is that if Turbo Tax has or hasn't reported the deduction for your auto registration. There are some things to consider.
The numbers on my deductions and credits page dont add up at all. I don't know what TT is doing here.
Can you clarify which specific numbers (entry topics) seem off? We can't see your return in this forum.
I'm having the EXACT same issue, and none of the suggestions apply(itemized, state doesn't allow, etc.). It's the EXACT same situation as last year, standard deduction. The only difference is a slight $10k additional income from last year, which has no bearing on the "vehicle registration fees." I agree with others here, that it has to be a TT software issue. I can't reproduce the screen to do a screen grab, it's its EXACTLY as others have described/displayed. 2020 standard deduction amount with "vehicle registration fees" directly below. Then for the 2021 column standard deduction and $0 for "vehicle registration fees." NOTHING has changed in my filing from the previous year or in my state's vehicle registration fees, that would affect the Federal tax issue. We're talking "Federal". . not state. Please investigate and report.
@toohip Vehicle registration fees reported on a federal tax return would only be entered as an itemized deduction on Schedule A provided the fee is based on the value of the vehicle. This has been this way for decades on a federal tax return.
Screenshot of a 2020 tax return Form 1040 showing Lines 1 thru 15. As noted there is nothing on the federal Form 1040 that will show a vehicle registration fee.
And you would be "WRONG" I've entered them in my last 5-7 years of using the Standard Deduction, and they ALWAYS show up on my Turbo tax deduction analysis as a 2nd line item, as ALL of these other members have indicated. I think we know what were talking about without having to debate whether/where to enter the "vehicle registration fees" (you can find the exact same question on 2020 TT tax questions as well)
To add on to the thread, I am also having this issue.
The vehicle license fee this year was $103 and it shows on my deductions summary page, but when going to the next page... it does not seem to register it for 2021.
I went back to the deductions summary page in case it didn't save, but it was still showing there. Weird.
The numbers on that Summary screen mean nothing. The numbers that matter are on your tax return. If you take the standard deduction this year or in any year you have taken the standard deduction - you did not get a deduction for property taxes (it is and always has been an itemized deduction). You get one or the other, NEVER both. Preview your Form 1040 and look at Line 12a - what number is there? If it is your standard deduction, there will be NO itemized deductions on your return. If it is the total of your itemized deductions on 12a, you can view Schedule A to see your property taxes (if deductible, see this Help) on Line 5 - you can itemize either Sales Tax or SALT (state and local, which included property tax).
Use this link to change from standard to itemized and see what happens to your tax return - Ignore the refund meter and summary screen. If you are trying to itemize, make sure all of your itemized deductions have been entered. If you have a $25k standard deduction, TurboTax will show the standard deduction up until the point your itemized deductions equal $25,001.
Please see the FAQ above which explains how standard and itemized deductions are factored into your Form 1040. You can view your Schedule A using the Print Center or Forms Mode to see your real numbers for itemized deductions. The numbers on the summary screens have no bearing on your actual Form 1040 that you are filing.
Why does my refund not change when I enter itemized deductions? This is about medical expenses, but all itemized deductions work this way.
I respect your background being a "tax expert" but I've filed taxes twice as long as you, and I KNOW for a fact what I'm saying is true.
I have the same thing, standard deduction last and this year, but summary of deductions and credits does not show vehicle registration fee entered in previous section
If you are claiming the standard deduction, the vehicle registration fee entered for the itemized deduction will not show on the summary screen. The standard deduction is a set amount you can subtract from the taxable income. You can itemize qualified expenses that exceed the standard deduction rate. Eligible expenses include vehicle registration, state and local income or sales taxes, real estate taxes, personal property taxes, mortgage interest, charitable gifts, disaster losses from a federally declared disaster, and medical expenses (stipulations apply).
You can choose to itemize if it does not exceed the standard deduction. However, this will result in more taxes being paid to the IRS. TurboTax software will allow you to enter the itemized deductions and notify you which option works best for the information entered. If you choose the standard deduction, the summary page will not include the items you listed under the itemized deduction interview questions.
Why are my vehicle registration fees not showing under deductions in the final summary? They show for 2021 but not 2022.
