the irs is asking me to fill out form 8812

If you have no Advanced Child Tax Credit, entering $0 should be sufficient.  However, It sounds like you are caught in a computer loop.  Please try these steps below just one more time, then click Federal Review.

  1. Click on the "Search" on the top and type "Child tax credit"
  2. Click on “Jump to Child Tax Credit”
  3. Continue through the questions until the "Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments" screen and select "No".
  4. Continue through the questions.

After Federal Review, if the problem still persists, please clear your cookies, history and reboot.

the irs is asking me to fill out form 8812

Hi, My spouse and I have no children or other dependents listed. No advance Child Tax Credit Payments received from the IRS in 2021 or before that. This doesn't apply to us yet Schedule 8812 was created by TurboTax for us.

I cleared the cookies and cache files as you instructed, closed everything, then restarted my PC. Reopened TurboTax Deluxe desktop version, went to:

  >Federal Deductions & Credits

  > You and Your Family

  > Child and Other Dependent Tax Credit

  > Update

  > Let's check for child and other dependent credits

  > Continue

  > Child Tax Credit Payments: Did you receive any advance Child Tax Credit payments from the IRS in 2021?

  >>NO

  > Continue

  > Was your main home located in the U.S. for 6 or more months during 2021?

  >>YES

  > Continue

  > It turns out you don't qualify for these credits

  > Done

When I go to Forms view to review the filings, Schedule 8812 is still there but appears to show $0 refundable or additional child tax credit. What do I do about this Schedule 8812?

@kptx08 Everyone has to answer whether they received advance child tax credit payments.   If you did not receive any of those payments between July and December you need to answer that you did not receive any payments.

There are so many scenarios with those payments---like divorced/never married parents who have issues over who received the payments, who claimed the children, etc. --- the software has no way of knowing if any of that involves you---so you have to answer the questions about it.

Please follow these steps to indicate you did not receive any advanced payments:

  1. Click on the "Search" on the top and type "Child tax credit"
  2. Click on “Jump to Child Tax Credit”
  3. Continue through the questions until the "Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments" screen and select "No".
  4. Continue through the question

Hi @xmasbaby0 , I did answer the questions about it as listed above. So, my takeaway from this is that since I had no children or dependents and no advance child tax credit payments, Schedule 8812 doesn't really apply to me. Since it's not impacting my taxes (no additional tax and no tax credit), then it seems that it doesn't matter that Schedule 8812 is there. Is this correct?

No it has no impact on your refund or tax due.   You just need to say that you have no dependents or that you did not receive any advance child tax credit payments.  If you come to a screen that asks you to enter how much you received for child tax credit say zero.

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.
