If I'm on disability and have one child can I get any money back for the child tax credit

A person needs to file a tax return in order to get the Child Tax Credit. Any Advance payments they received is subtracted from their full eligible amount.

For tax year 2023 you must earn at least $2,500 from work to be eligible for the Child Tax Credit.

SSI is Supplemental Security Income and is not reported on a tax return.

Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits are reported on a form SSA-1099 and the benefits received are to be entered on a federal tax return.  However, if the Social Security benefits are the Only income to be reported on the tax return, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.

Q. I’m on SSI can I get Child tax credit for 2023?

A. No.

The money you hear about people getting for just filing a tax return claiming kids requires them to  have some earned income (wages or self employment). Without earned income, they are not eligible for the "refundable" Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit.  Both credits are calculated on the amount of earned income you have. No earned income means no "refund". A small amount of earned income means a small refund. The child tax credit does not "kick in" unless you have at least $2500 of earned income.

A child can be the “qualifying child” dependent of any close relative in the household. If you live with someone else, e.g. your parents, it may be better if they claim your child.

Instead, you could allow the non-custodial parent to claim the children.  Non-custodial parents are allowed to claim the child tax credit, but not the Earned income credit.

If the Social Security benefits is the Only income to be reported on the tax return and there is no federal income taxes being withheld, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.

Do you have a question?

@allliekatt1 We are not sure what you are trying to ask about, but this thread began with a user who wanted to know about getting the refundable child tax credit while receiving disability benefits.  If your only income is Social Security disability, you are not eligible to get the refundable child tax credit.  That credit is based on having income from working.   There was only one tax year in which you could have received the credit while only getting SS disability---that was for 2021, but the tax laws changed after that one year and went back to the "old" rules.

If I'm on ssd can I file taxes now that I have 6 forster children under the age of 9 that I take care of or should I let someone else file them to get the child tax credit?  Thanks for your help

@Lisalala4u  If your only income is Social Security you are not eligible to get the refundable additional child tax credit.   That credit is based on having income from working.  And, if they are YOUR foster children, you cannot "let"someone else claim them as that would be tax fraud.

No, if your only income is SSI, you can't claim the child Tax credit. You need to have at least $2,500 of earned income.
