In this situation, you should combine all of the 1098s directly related to the refinance and enter it as one 1098.

Follow these steps to enter your mortgage info:

  1. Gather all of your 1098 forms related to your refinance (the form from your original lender and the form from your new lender).
  2. Grab a calculator and add together the box 1 amount from each form. Enter the total in TurboTax as Box 1 Mortgage interest.
  3. Add the Box 5 amount from each form and enter the total as Box 5 Mortgage insurance premiums. (If you weren’t required to pay mortgage insurance, these boxes will be blank on your forms and you won’t enter anything.)
  4. Add the property tax paid from each form and enter it in the Property (real estate) taxes box.

Next, finish adding info for boxes 2, 3, 7, and 11 using Form 1098 for the original loan.

For certain situations a workaround may be available.  Please clarify your forms 1098 situation.  Do you have one loan that has been refinanced/sold? or Two loans on two different properties?  If refinanced, did you take out cash and use for something other than improving building your home?

I have one loan on one property that has been refinanced, creating two 1098s. No cash was taken out of this refinance. The only slight oddity is points not reported on 1098 for the refinance loan.

I also talked to tech support and these tech supports got no clue how to resolve and elevate to tier 2. A simple question that can TurboTax Business software version fix this problem or not... and they told me that: "No one know" - I am a Software engineer and have been using the Turbo Tax SW for many years... and doing tax for my family... It is a concern with Intuit that their software engineer can not figure this issue out... Frustrating.

Please do not report both homes on one Form 1098; they should each be reported on their own form.

Thanks for responding. How do I enter the data on separate 1098 form? The Turbo Tax, Premier version is not allowing for separate 1098 form... I tried several different ways but at the end, it still come up with the same messages!
