If your return was e-filed and accepted it would be impossible to e-file again.  The IRS will not accept another e-file with your Social Security number on it.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/personalfinance/where-is-my-damn-irs-tax-refund-new-answers-emerge-a...

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.   Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.  The IRS is backlogged —-they are still trying to process millions of 2019 returns; they received millions of e-filed on the day they opened for 2020 returns, and now they are burdened with sending out another round of stimulus checks.

Some delays are resulting from incorrect amounts that folks entered for stimulus checks they received.   Many people have been confused by the recovery rebate credit and completed it incorrectly.  The IRS may delay your refund while they cross-check to see what you received.  Some refunds are delayed because of the tax law changes that went into effect recently.   If your return has unemployment or the premium tax credit on it, that may be delaying it.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

You can check on your return status by following the links below.

If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

After the tax return has been accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's -
https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Only the IRS would know why your return is still processing. TurboTax does not get any information about your return or refund once your return is accepted.

Since it has been over 21 days you can also call the IRS for information, but it may take some time to connect.

The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040, and they are available from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The best time to call is early in the morning.

How do you ever talk to someone at [phone number removed]?  It is always automated.  I'm at 7 weeks since filing.

Yes, unfortunately it is difficult to reach the IRS at the moment. The IRS is seriously backlogged with processing returns. Please keep checking the IRS Where's My Refund? site for updates.

Omg... literally going through the same thing. It’s only me and my daughter and i’ve been without income AT ALL (no unemp, help?l, nothing) for 2 months and I try to call the IRS and it’s impossible to actuAlly talk with someone. I filed on March 10th... like, what the heck!

I have the child tax credit is that why? like i didn’t try to get another stimulus, I already had it. It is SO frustrating ! :(

I spent an entire day trying to call the IRS phone number and it kept directing me to other options then disconnecting the line.

I heard that they are not answering phone calls right now.

the IRS main phone number is experiencing a HUGE delay in responses. the best thing to do is try for a Wednesday Thursday and try in the morning. But chances are you won't get much information. The phone assistor will be able to just look at the same thing you see on your transcript if you signed up for that. At least that will tell you what is going on.

At this point it is better to wait for your return to process.  If you file another return it will be rejected due to the IRS already having a return in processing for you. It could potentially delay the processing even more for potential identity theft.

At that point you will more than likely be required to make an appointment with a local IRS office to verify your identity.

The IRS is hard to contact, see this.  Each return must be cross checked for the normal and now with the new laws:

  • stimulus- is it correct, pay missing amounts, do they need to be added for the new stimulus
  • unemployment - is it on there, was it filed with the $10,200 subtraction, does it need to be adjusted
  • premium tax credit - is it on there, is there an amount due, adjust the return
  • EIC - is it on, were they banned, is there a record of release to claim?
  • Child credit -anybody else claim, how old are kids, what is allowed
  • Typos, offsets, and so on for still more, it is a long process this year to check each return for so many things.
  • If there is a problem, you will get a letter explaining the issue.

The IRS is also processing returns mailed in last year and handling the current stimulus. They have scheduled this summer to adjust unemployment on returns.

The more items on your return, the more complicated the processing. Some people are getting their refund in two parts.

The IRS is seriously backlogged due to all the new tax laws and extra stimulus filings, as well as unprocessed 2019 returns still left over from the COVID shutdown.  Unfortunately, contacting the IRS will not speed things up.  Lots of other folks are still waiting, so please continue to be patient.  Also see:
