I drive for my job and am paid drive time, but not mileage. I’m wondering if a tax break is available due to the lack of pay in mileage. If so, how is this tracked?

If you are an independent contractor then you can prepare a Schedule C to enter your business expenses like mileage.  And if you use online TurboTax you will need to use Self-Employed.  If you are self-employed post back for further help with self-employment income.

I could have sworn I replied to this exact post earlier with this information:

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.
