How to finish a prior year online return
You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.
THe online version is called Self-Employed. The desktop version is called Home & Business. The only difference between the two, is the spelling.
The IRS closed e-filing for the 2018 tax filing season on Oct 15, 2019 permanently and forever. So your only option is to print, sign and mail your return to the IRS. No matter what program you purchase, you flat out can *NOT* e-file. So if you completed your 2018 taxes and just need to mail them, all you have to do is download and print the PDF version, sign it, and mail it to the IRS. Otherwise if you need to finish your 2018 taxes before you can print, sign and mail them, you'll have to use the Desktop version of TTX 2018. If you already paid for the 2018 online version, then you can call TTX support and see if they will credit you for purchasing the desktop version of 2018. Otherwise if you did not yet pay for the online version of TTX 2018, don't bother calling for a credit.
If you paid online fees after Dec 1, 2019, then you did *NOT* pay for 2018. You paid for 2019.
If you paid for the online software, you did not pay an extra fee to e-file. The fee is the same whether you e-file or print it and mail it, so there is no reason to refund anything to you because you did not/could not e-file.
