You'll get Form 1099-SA (not to be confused with Form SSA-1099) if you used funds in your Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Medical Savings Account (MSA) to pay for health care expenses.
It's important that you enter the information from your 1099-SA before you enter your medical expenses, so we can properly calculate your medical expense deduction.
You can do one of two things if you did not get a form 1099-SA:
1. You did not use any Health Savings Account (HSA) money to pay for healthcare bills so you did not receive form 1099-SA and you do not have to enter anything in TurboTax.
To remove your 1099-SA:
See the screenshot below.
2. You did use money from your HSA but your HSA account administrator did not send you the form. Contact your administrator or access your HSA account online and look for 2016 Tax Forms or Year-end Tax Forms.
I have a follow up question on this. I did have a Health Spending Account that I contributed to AND I used all of the funds in it to pay for medical expenses. I contacted the company and they stated that they do not create 1099-SA forms for customers and that the information I need should be on my W2. My W2 shows my dependent spending account I created but does not show my HSA. Do you know what I should do on TurboTax online when it asks me to fill in the information from my 1099-SA?
Health Savings Account contributions made through work should appear as Code W in Box 12 of your W-2. The 1099-SA only shows withdrawals from your HSA.
Are you sure you have an HSA? You may have a flexible spending account (FSA). FSAs cover dependent care and do not send out 1099-SAs. Your HSA provider is required to send a 1099-SA to the IRS if there were distributions from the account.
If you do have an HSA and you are not being sent a 1099-SA, is the information available online in your account? Any numbers should match what’s being reported to the IRS. If TurboTax asks about 1099-SA numbers, I suggest trying to get the correct numbers from your HSA to put into TurboTax.
I am in a similar situation. However, in Nov 2022 my HSA bank changed. The previous bank has not sent me the 1099-SA accounting for distributions from Jan - Nov 2022. I have tried to contact them several times (only have a phone number) without success. What do I do?
Since the deadline for providing tax documents has only passed about a week ago, perhaps you just have not received your Form 1099-SA in the mail.
In addition to attempting to contact the previous bank by phone, your tax form may be available online if you have online access to your account. Lastly, you may be able to get some additional information from your new HSA bank with regard to the changeover and what you can expect as far as your tax documentation.
