Deductions & credits

You'll get Form 1099-SA (not to be confused with Form SSA-1099) if you used funds in your Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Medical Savings Account (MSA) to pay for health care expenses.

It's important that you enter the information from your 1099-SA before you enter your medical expenses, so we can properly calculate your medical expense deduction.

You can do one of two things if you did not get a form 1099-SA:

1. You did not use any Health Savings Account (HSA) money to pay for healthcare bills so you did not receive form 1099-SA and you do not have to enter anything in TurboTax.

To remove your 1099-SA:

  • Type 1099-SA in the search box and click search.
  • Click on Jump to 1099-SA.
  • At the Your HSA Summary, click on Edit.
  • On the Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2016 screen, click Continue.
  • On the Here's what we have so far screen, click Delete next to the 1099-SA you entered (if any).
  • Continue with the onscreen interview.

See the screenshot below.

2. You did use money from your HSA but your HSA account administrator did not send you the form. Contact your administrator or access your HSA account online and look for 2016 Tax Forms or Year-end Tax Forms.
