Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

I think I'm owed like $3000 or so. I can't remember the exact amount but I definitely feel like I got cheated out of the rest of that money. I knew I wasn't crazy.

I am confused can someone help me understand

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

The $3000 you see on line 28 is the child tax credit you will receive as part of your refund.  Your total refund is shown on line 35a.

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

Yes I had the exact same problem. I put all of my information in except the info from letter 6419 because I hadn't received it yet. My refund was showing it would be over $4000. I knew I would lose the $1500 from my 1 dependent I had received payments for. But instead my refund dropped all the way down to $600 just by adding the $1500 advanced payments. I am still owed the remaining $1500 from the CTC!! I was not happy with this at all but with it being the last week to file I sent it in anyway.

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

@dprz78 You have two dependent children ages 6 thru 17?  If so, then you should have received $3,000 in advance child tax credits in 2021 as shown on the Letters 6419 you received.  You were supposed to enter the Total advance child tax credits received for both you and your spouse.

That is why the IRS removed $1,500 of the Child Tax Credit from your Form 1040 on Line 28 since their records show that you were sent $3,000 not $1,500.

Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the advance child tax credit is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you are Married Filing Jointly also check your spouse's tax account.

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

The IRS sent a letter to adjust my Refund because Turbo Tax didn’t complete my 8812 CTC child Tax Credit.

Turbo Tax is making a lot mistake with us.

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

Hi @tino2001 how were you able to do that? I think that's something I definitely need as well.

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

@CaseyTX were you ever able to get a hold of someone about the remainder of the money?

Having Problems with Child Tax Credit

@babyt2012  Did you have a problem entering the advance child tax credit payments correctly?   Did you receive payments of $300 or $250 per child between July and December?   If so you had to enter the amount you received---it was on letter 6419.  If you filed a joint return the IRS sent one of those letters to both of you, and you had to add the amounts together to get it right.  If you did not enter it or did not add it together you ended up with too much on line 28, and the IRS had to make a correction to your refund.

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.

The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.   Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.
