So i FILED my 2020 and i added my 2019 W2 I didn’t know you couldn’t do that. And I answered No to my son not having a Valid SSN for THE CHILD TAX CREDIT and i meant to put yes I submitted it. I want to know is there ANY POSSIBLE WAY i can fix my taxes? This was my first time filing on my own I always had help.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You will have to wait for the IRS to process that incorrect 2020 tax return and then amend it. You cannot amend until it has been fully processed. You were not supposed to enter 2019 income on a 2020 tax return, so when you amend you will have to remove that 2019 W-2. You will also need to correct the information you entered about your child's Social Security number in My Info.
If you did not file a 2019 return and want to file 2019 correctly----here is how to do that:
The current online program can only be used for a 2020 return--no other year. And if you did not file a 2019 return you will have trouble e-filing 2020. When it asks for your 2019 AGI try using zero. If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2020.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2017, 2018 and 2019 is permanently closed.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2017, 2018, or 2019 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Well can i just REMOVE the 2019 and only fix the child tax credit if it will be a difficultly filing a 2019 W2 i just want to remove it. I thought adding it would get me the first & second stimulus checks i did not get & I didn’t get the Newborn payment for 2020 my son was born march 13th 2020 i know someone said he has to be with me for at least 6 months. And he’s been living with me the entire time and he’s 1 now. @xmasbaby0
The way to get the 1st and 2nd stimulus payments was to enter your child correctly as a dependent (You have to say the child lived with you the WHOLE year--you are allowed to say that for a newborn) and use the recovery rebate credit on your 2020 return:
Children born in 2020 were not included in the 1st stimulus because those checks were based on 2018 or 2019. No one got stimulus money for babies born in 2020 because the IRS did not know about those babies or have their SSN’s. But on your 2020 tax return you can claim your child born in 2020 for the stimulus money, as well as the other child-related credits. You enter your new dependent in My Info. When you go through the screens in My Info make sure to say your child lived with you the WHOLE year. When it asks the oddly worded question about whether your child paid for over half their own support say NO.
The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return. If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021
The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the FEDERAL REVIEW section. ( you should see "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount”) If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.
Make sure that you enter ALL of the stimulus money received for the 1st and 2nd stimulus for yourself, your spouse and your children.
