trying to file using me free state but it is asking me to pay.

In the desktop software the "free state" is an included state program to prepare the state returns for that one state.   However, there is a 24.99 state efile fee for each state return chosen to efile, except no fee for New York state.  There is no additional fee if you print and mail the state return.

Oh sorry I missed that it was about State.  Sorry the other answer is correct.

There is a lot of confusion about this. For the Desktop versions Deluxe and above, it's a free download of one state preparation PROGRAM, not returns filed. You can prepare unlimited federal and unlimited state returns. Some people need to file in more than one state so they have to buy another state program at 39.99. You can print and mail the state for free or each state return (including the first one) is 19.99 until March, then goes to 24.99.  Box says Federal Returns & Federal E-File plus State returns.  It does not say state efiling is included.  It also says on the back on my CD case in the chart comparing the versions - 1 state product via download (print free  or efile for $19.99 each) prices subject to change without notice.

You have upgraded to Deluxe.  There are 2 free versions. In the regular Turbo Tax Free Edition, information that you can enter is limited now.  Why do I have to upgrade from the Free Edition?
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/upgrading/help/why-do-i-have-to-upgrade-from-free-edition/00/26379

To go back to a lower version or the Free Edition you can try to clear and start over https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-clear-and-start-over-in-turbotax-onli...

OR There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state.  And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE,  etc.

To qualify for the Free File website  you just need to meet one of these 3 things
AGI $36,000 or less
Active duty military with AGI of $69,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)

In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website. Try signing in at the top right

More info is needed.   Please clarify what product you are using.

Are you using Online TurboTax Deluxe as is displayed underneath your question?   If so, in the online Deluxe Edition a state return is $50 for preparation.  Efiling of the return is free.

Or are you using desktop software (CD/download)?  If so, there is a 24.99 fee to efile a state return, except free for NY state.  There is no fee to print and mail a state return prepared in the desktop software.

trying to file using me free state but it is asking me to pay.

I am using the Deluxe downloaded version that says it comes with 5 free federal e-files and 1 free state.

Everything is complete and I am trying to efile the state but it is asking for 24.99 to e-file.

I do not qualify for the online free versions.

Thx

Turbotax is nothing but a rip-off, I have been using this software since it was first created years ago...I will never ever purchase this software ever again.I have a very substantial media platform following and I intend to let everyone there know that your software is a rip-off and warn them not to buy it or patronize your company
