An e-file rejection just means that some things on your return don't match the IRS database.

If you're looking to amend (change) your return, go here instead.

First, check your email

Look for an ACTION NEEDED! email from turbotax@intuit.com. It'll give you a brief explanation of your reject and how to update it.

Didn't get an email? Sign in to TurboTax, select Fix my return, and you'll see your reject code and explanation.

Then, find a solution

Here are the 10 most "popular" IRS rejections. Select yours for detailed instructions on how to fix your return:

  • IND-031-04: The AGI or Self-select PIN from last year for the first taxpayer doesn't match IRS records
  • FW2-502: The name or EIN for an employer on your W-2 doesn't match IRS records
  • R0000-504-02: The name or Social Security number for a dependent on your return doesn't match IRS records
  • IND-032-04: The spouse's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year doesn't match IRS records
  • R0000-507-01: A dependent on your return has already been claimed on another return
  • IND-181-01: The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing
  • F1040-164-01: Must file Form 8862 to claim Earned Income Credit
  • R0000-500-01: The name or Social Security number for the first taxpayer doesn't match IRS records
  • IND-524: The date of birth does not match IRS records
  • IND-516-01: If the Primary Taxpayer is claimed as an exemption in the return, then the Primary SSN must not be the same as a Dependent SSN on another return

Don't see yours here? There are numerous e-file reject codes, these are just some popular ones. With your return open, search for your specific code to find help articles on how to fix the error and refile.

Finally, fix and refile your return

Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection, and continue through to refile your return (either e-file or file by mail).

Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fixing the information. If you aren't guided to your solution, search for the item causing your rejection and go to that section. Make the change and select File in the left-hand menu. Follow the onscreen instructions to either e-file your return or file by mail.

Still getting rejected?

If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed.

In these cases, go ahead and file a paper return, rather than wasting your time trying to "fix" something you can't fix.

Similarly, if you get the same rejection a second time (or third, or fourth, or fifth...) and you see no mistakes on your return, select the File by mail option to paper-file your return.

Sometimes, returns keep getting rejected even though there's nothing wrong with them (data mismatches, dependents already claimed, and so forth).

In these cases, we recommend paper-filing by mail rather than wasting additional time trying to "fix" something that is beyond your control.

The rejection code depends upon your return and any issues not resolved in the review section of the preparation.

Log back into your return.  You will a button that says Fix My return.

Once you select that button, the program will walk you through the steps or ask for the information needed to fix your return.

Please see the attached for additional information.

How to fix a rejected return

If you are still unable to e-file your return, please comment with the rejection codes you are receiving so we can direct you accordingly.

Your other option is to mail your return in.

My state return (California) was rejected, though my federal was accepted. The error code I was given was:

F540/NR/2EZ-320 - Duplicate SSN: The Primary Taxpayer's social security number cannot match a previously accepted return unless the (AmendedReturn) checkbox is checked.

I have not filed previously for 2019, so it should not be a duplicate SSN. This is not an amended return, so I do not want to check that box; there is nothing I can modify. I tried resubmitting and got the same error.

If you are positive that you didn't already e-file/paper file your return on an earlier date, you may be a victim of identity theft. You will have to file a paper state return instead of e-filing. The CA FTB has resources on identity theft here, including a form you should fill out.

You can access IRS resources on identity theft here. It's a good idea to get a jump on this, even if your federal return was accepted. You might have an issue with e-filing your federal next year if it turns out you are a victim.

TurboTax also has resources on identity theft here.

Thank you. I am pretty certain it is not identity theft. I created an account at ftb.ca.gov using the Primary Taxpayer's SSN and it indicates that the state has not received our 2019 taxes:

2019 Return Status:
Not Received

I can, however, see our e-filed (via TurboTax) state returns for 2012-2018 in this account.

If the state is saying no tax return has been submitted with this SSN for 2019, why am I getting this rejection code? I just tried e-filing again and it is still rejected with this error code.  I know the SSN on my return is correct; I have been e-filing through TurboTax software for years and all my info gets imported from the previous year, and I also checked it after the error.

My concern is that there may be an error in how TurboTax is communicating with the state site, and I am frustrated that I will have to paper file after paying $25 to e-file.

What did you do to resolve the issue? I am now in the same boat

state rejected

I had to paper file my state taxes. I went through TurboTax chat support in Facebook to try to get reimbursed for the $25 I had paid to e-file the state, but they told me that to confirm that I was due a refund I needed to email them a bunch of personal identifiers (including last 4 digits of SSN). I was not comfortable doing this, so I ended up contesting the charges in my credit card app and got reimbursed that way.
