Should I get more PA state taken out of paycheck so don't owe as much DE next year?

I work in PA, live in DE. After doing taxes recently, I owe Delaware a few hundred dollars. I only get PA state tax taken out of my check, so whatever was taken out credited towards DE and I owed the difference. if I get them to take like lets say, additional $12 a week out of my check for PA, will that be a good idea so Im not owing as much for DE next year? looking for options so I'm not owing a big chunk like this time.

That's hard to know...but if you got a PA refund of anything this year...that won't work for DE.  DE only allows a credit for :

1)  what PA keeps of your PA withholding...not always the total of what was withheld for PA.

and

2)  Since DE tax rates can be higher than PA  (DE tops at ~6% vs PA's flat ~3%, and that depends on your total year's income) , your actual PA taxes paid and credited to DE may never make up for the extra tax DE asseses.

Options:

1)  If you (or working spouse) has other DE W-2 income for which DE withholding can be done, try to increase the withholding for that income.

2)  Start paying in some DE Quarterly estimated taxes to approximately match what extra you guess you would owe at tax time next year :    You can get the forms to download, or arrange to make each single payment before each Quarterly deadline ( at say $100/Quarter?) by starting here:

Thank you for the response! I didn’t get any refund from PA it was at 0.  I used to have a second part time job in De that I did get extra taken out which helped. But unfortunately I’m not there anymore and just have this one job so That option is out!
i also thought could get extra federal taken out of checks so I’d get more of that in a return to have extra to put towards whatever is owed. It’s so confusing I wish it was easier!
Ill have to check out the quarterly payments option. I can always mark it on the calendar every 3 months to pay like 100

Please download this W4 pdf  to fill out and present to your employer.  In this link are instructions to use the worksheets how to determine how much withholding to have taken out of your check.

@ts1080

i.e a new W-4 could increase your Federal withholding, and get a greater Fed refund next year......and yeah, that could be used by you for paying DE later.

.......but you'd still have to wait for the Federal refund to be issued if you didn't have enough saved up to simply Pay DE what is owed at tax time.  (you can't have a Federal refund directed to DE...you have to get it yourself, then pay DE separately)

BUT, since the W-4 form has brand new layout this year you'd have to monitor whatever Federal withholding changes the Employer actually makes..then readjust if it won't at least match what was withheld in 2019  (assuming he exact same income as in 2019)....that's kind-of a crapshoot guess.
