Over withhold Social Secuity

Hello, we're currently filling taxes for tax year 2023 via turbotax. That said, during the 2023 year I switched employers and ended up over withholding social security as a result.

How do I account for that over withholding via the turbotax UI?

Over withhold Social Secuity

Turbo Tax will automatically calculate that.  Be sure to enter the W2s under the right spouse.  For 2023 it will be on Schedule 3 line 11 which goes to 1040 line 31. The Social Security overpayment on line 31 is included in the total refund on line 35a.

If you had more than 1 employer and paid more than $9,932.40 in Social Security tax (box 4) combined you get the excess back on your tax return. If you are married it is for each spouse separately. Be sure each W2 is assigned to the right spouse.

Over withhold Social Secuity

If the total Social Security taxes withheld from two of your employers was over $9,932.40 the excess amount will be entered on your tax return by the TurboTax program as a tax payment on Schedule 3 Line 11.  The total from Schedule 3 Line 15 flows to the Form 1040 Line 31 as a tax payment.

The excess SS taxes withheld will be included in your tax refund or it will reduce the amount of taxes owed.
