Lived in TX all of last year, but my job didn't update my address (used to live in NJ) How do I file properly to ensure I am refunded the NJ income tax withheld from all my pay from 2024?

Lived in TX all of 2024, but my job didn't update my address (used to live in NJ). There was zero change in my pay from when I lived in NJ in 2023 and to all of 2024 when I lived in TX.  How do I file properly to ensure I am refunded the NJ income tax withheld from all my pay from 2024?

You need to file a NON-resident tax return for New Jersey.   As for whether you will have to prove to NJ that you did not live there, you may have to sort that out with NJ yourself.

You will have to file a nonresident New Jersey state income tax return.  When asked for the amount of New Jersey income you received enter $0.

In the My Info section of the program you should have entered Texas as your resident state.  When asked if you lived in any other states you should have answered NO.  When asked if you made money in any other states you need to Answer Yes and select New Jersey.  (You are only answering Yes to the this question to get the New Jersey state program entered into your account)

The link you added isn't working for some reason. Is there another link to the NR form? Much appreciated, thank you!

@henriqsh Sorry for the bad link----but it was not a link to a NJ return form.  It was only a link to a FAQ about non-resident forms in general.    As long as you say in MY INFO that you made money in another state and click that it was NJ, the software should generate a NJ form for you.

Yes, the program should since you indicated you did not live in any other states.

Hey @xmasbaby0 no worries, and thanks for clarifying that. That was my main concern, accidentally filing the wrong form and then losing out on any taxes paid that should have been returned to me. I'll make sure to refer to all of your replies as I begin entering my info into the program when I file. Thanks again!
