Now it’s time to do NJ and the instructions tell you to go put in number from other state tax return but not clear what form and what line to pull that number. My form NY 203 line 37 New York taxable income seems to be based on full year. I already input my time in NY which is 8 months. While as resident of Nj, My husband works out of NY and I work on of NJ,
Should I multiple that line by 35% (% of time spend in NJ) to get the double tax income or do I take 35-% of of my husband salary?
Same goes for the 2nd question on tax paid. What should I be basing this amount on.

For NY it looks like the full year but it is adjusted for the part year period,
If you now do an NJ resident return, TurboTax should recognize the non-resident tax return.
Sorry but you are not answering my question which is what numbers do I put in this specific form? Clearly TurboTax isn’t inputting the answer in the form nor the instructions is clear on where to get the numbers so hence the question
Can someone who works for Turbo help me with this question. I m asking for a clarification on this screen because of the lack of clarity of the instructions.
thank you.
This screen is only if you are having the same money taxed by both states.
Enter the money earned while you were living in NJ that came from NY. You can look at paystubs to determine how much NY income your husband earned while living in NJ. Alternatively, if he makes the same amount each pay period, you can enter the % total from the time you lived in NJ. So, if his pay was 35% earned while a NJ resident, enter that NY income here along with the tax paid on that income.
My screens do not match yours. I have entered $90,000 for w2 income and claiming $40,000 NJ and $50,000 NY income.
For the NJ side, I have:
You will need to enter your wages and then take a look at your forms. You should pay tax for income earned while living in each state. However, since you had both states income during both resident and non-resident, you need to check your allocations and tax schedules. In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.
For online, see How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing? The program should be pulling the tax amounts and pro-rating for you.
Your forms will have your numbers but this should help you understand a bit more. Here is what the NJ allocation looks like. I put in $90,000 earned for the year. $40,000 earned from anywhere while resident- covers column A and B. Then you move out of NJ which leaves $50,000 earned while not a resident. Of that $50,000 I put that $10,000 came from working in NJ after moving out.
Companre NJ vs NY: NJ first
Compared to the NY allocation. I again used $90,000 federal which means if $40,000 was earned in NJ then $50,000 was earned in NY. Of the $40,000 earned while a non-resident, I chose $30,000 earned from NY while not living there.
Next we look at the IT 203 lines 45-50. NY taxes all NY income and we see the tax liability. Enter the portion of line 50 that matches the NJ income portion.

This explanation is very helpful.
but now since I exit out of the tax return I cannot find the screen that ask the question. How do I go back to this screen and enter the info?
Your original question is unclear. In answering your question, I am assuming that you and your husband both lived and worked in New York for 8 months. You then moved to New Jersey, at which point your husband continued to work in NY, and you lived and worked in NJ and were not subject to tax in NY under the “convenience of the employer rule” and are reporting no NY income for your period of non-residency.
If this is true, your double-taxed income is 25% of your husband’s income (4 months), since this is the only income being taxed by both NY and NJ.
Income taxed by another state will be 25% of your husband’s wages.
New York tax will be 14.29% of IT-203 line 46.
Suppose you and your husband both made $100,000 ($200,000 total). Your NY income is $175,000 ($100,000 him and $75,000 you – 8 months). Of this amount, $25,000 is taxed by NJ (4 months of his salary). $25k/$175k is 14.29%.
Thank you.
@ErnieS0 @AmyC - your answer exactly answer my question. Thank you!
When I went through the NY state part, TurboTax asked me all those very specific questions that splits the income a few different ways, somehow when it got to NJ return, the instructions was not very clear and it would have been nice if Turbo could have logic that populates based on the answer I gave in the NY portion. At the minimum the instructions should give some example of how to interpret the question.
For state return it’s very difficult to navigate to the specific part once you exit the return. I can not seem to find this screen again. What tax form/worksheet does this info go into? Maybe I can locate it that way
Allocation of Income and taxes paid to other Jurisdictions is Schedule NJ-COJ.
While going through NJ Interview you will get to the screen that shows:
