State tax filing

This screen is only if you are having the same money taxed by both states.

Enter the money earned while you were living in NJ that came from NY. You can look at paystubs to determine how much NY income your husband earned while living in NJ. Alternatively, if he makes the same amount each pay period, you can enter the % total from the time you lived in NJ. So, if his pay was 35% earned while a NJ resident, enter that NY income here along with the tax paid on that income.

My screens do not match yours. I have entered $90,000 for w2 income and claiming $40,000 NJ and $50,000 NY income.

For the NJ side, I have:

You will need to enter your wages and then take a look at your forms. You should pay tax for income earned while living in each state. However, since you had both states income during both resident and non-resident, you need to check your allocations and tax schedules. In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.

For online, see How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing? The program should be pulling the tax amounts and pro-rating for you.

Your forms will have your numbers but this should help you understand a bit more. Here is what the NJ allocation looks like. I put in $90,000 earned for the year. $40,000 earned from anywhere while resident- covers column A and B. Then you move out of NJ which leaves $50,000 earned while not a resident. Of that $50,000 I put that $10,000 came from working in NJ after moving out.

Companre NJ vs NY: NJ first

Compared to the NY allocation. I again used $90,000 federal which means if $40,000 was earned in NJ then $50,000 was earned in NY. Of the $40,000 earned while a non-resident, I chose $30,000 earned from NY while not living there.

Next we look at the IT 203 lines 45-50. NY taxes all NY income and we see the tax liability. Enter the portion of line 50 that matches the NJ income portion.
