You are not required to report your 1099-NEC in detail on your tax return in TurboTax. To resolve this error you should delete the 1099-NEC entry and add the income directly to your Schedule C. To do this in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:
Further information regarding my post about the 1099-NEC error message: I get the message below. (NOTE: I blanked out the compensation amount to keep that private.
I don't know what to type in the blank next to "Schedule C".
The blank box beside Schedule C indicates that there is not a Schedule C included in your return. If there was one there, the business name would be shown and you could double-click it to link the Form 1099-NEC to the Schedule C.
You have to enter a Schedule C to clear this issue.
Income reported on Form 1099-NEC is not reportable directly on your tax return. Just entering the information on that form is only one step. Since it is self-employment or 'non-employee compensation' it must be associated with a Schedule C, even if there are no expenses being claimed.
The information required for the Schedule C will include the type of business, the business name (or your name if there is no specific business name), the business address (or your address), etc.
Since income reported on Form 1099-NEC needs to be reported on Schedule C, the program is trying to tie these two forms together to be sure that it is reported correctly and on the right form.
Try going back to the section where you entered the Form 1099-NEC if you entered it on its own and delete that entry. Use these steps:
This will bring you to the summary of all Form 1099-NEC that you have entered. Click Delete or the trash can icon next to each one.
Next, you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC as part of the Schedule C so that the income is reported directly as part of your Business Income and Expenses and within the correct form and section of your return.
Use these steps to go to the Schedule C section of your return.
If you already have a Schedule C in your return, edit it and go to the section to Add Income. This is where you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC.
If you do not already have a Schedule C in your return, follow the prompts and enter the information about your work/business for which you received the Form 1099-NEC. Then continue through that section to Add Income and enter the Form 1099-NEC plus any other income you received for that self-employed business.
Don't forget you can also claim expenses related to your business.
After you are finished, the error condition should be eliminated.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the detailed help! Because I did enter business expenses I thought I was completing a Schedule C.
I'm going to follow your instructions now and see if I can get the return finished. Fingers tightly crossed!
Gratefully,
Sharon
I have a similar problem with the error message, but my payment was a legal settlement that had nothing to do with wages or performing services for the company. Do I have to complete a Schedule C to remove the error message?
Delete the 1099-C entry and enter your 1099-NEC following these steps:
Thanks for your response. I don't have a "1099-C entru" (maybe a typo). Anyway, I deleted and reenterred the 1099-NEC including all of the info you flagged through the lawsuit settlement box. Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem - I am still getting the missing info message and a note that the incomplete form will be deleted. I don't use/need Schedule C (the only compensation I received is W2 wages, the 1099-NEC was for a legal settlement)
I should have typed Schedule C. here are the corrected steps to follow to resolve the error:
Use the Chrome browser and clear browsing data for all time. Then sign into TurboTax and delete the Schedule C and the 1099-B:
Now enter the 1099-NEC again:

Thanks so much. One problem, I don't use the on-line version. I downloaded the software. Can you walk me through the correction for that?
Let me know which version of TurboTax you downloaded, and I will send you directions for that version. There are slight differences in each version.
Thanks Mary. I'm using Turbo Tax Deluxe 2020
These re the only fields that need to be completed on the 1099-NEC
The EIN or SSN and the name of the person or company who paid you
The amount in Box 1
The reason for the NEC amount in Box 1
In TurboTax Deluxe - step by step
This should remove the error.
@RSM123
Great. I went through the questions and switched to form mode. I'm at the form an there are only 3 choices for box 1 (Report on line 1 of Form 1040; Other Income; and Back Wages from lawsuit). Neither of these seem to apply. My situation is a legal settlement from an investment advisor to compensate for losses caused by a mistake they made - the payment had nothing to do with wages or any work performed by me. The settlement was intended to make me whole.
THANKS AGAIN. SORRY I'M STRUGGLING WITH THIS. TURBO TAX HAS BEEN SO EASY IN PREVIOUS YEARS I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP.
I am in a similar situation where I have received a 1099-NEC for a lawsuit settlement not related to back wages. I have tried your suggestion and continue to get the "Missing info" error. I cleared my Chrome history. I did not have a Schedule C, 1099-B, or schedule SE to delete. I deleted 1099-NEC worksheet and 1099-MISC/1099-NEC summary entries. I re-entered by 1099-NEC info and still same problem.
I will suggest you to enter info under "Other Income", instead. Here are the steps:
In TurboTax online,
To see if your settlement is taxable, click here: Settlements
