Keep getting error msg:missing info in 1099-NEC.I've put in all the info on the 1099-NEC doc from the payer. Can't figure out what is missing in TurboTax.

Hi,

I keep getting this error and there is no way of resolving it in 2022 it seems. I've tried to do what you laid out here, but I already have a Schedule C going and the 1099-NEC is in fact linked there. I've been through this process three times and nothing is working. It's for one 1099-NEC out of half a dozen; the others are fine, and I can't understand why this one is giving me problems. There is no information missing. I even tried adding it as a new business and it didn't work.

You are not required to report your 1099-NEC in detail on your tax return in TurboTax.  To resolve this error you should delete the 1099-NEC entry and add the income directly to your Schedule C.   To do this in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

  1. Within your return in TurboTax Online search for 1099-NEC.
  2. Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Delete the 1099-NEC line with the trash can icon.
  4. If you get to the question Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? answer Yes and enter your income amount with a description of your choosing (this label does not show up on your return anywhere)
  5. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen.
  6. Click on Delete a Form
  7. Scroll down to your 1099-NEC and click Delete if it is still there.

The same thing is happening to me.  I am choosing legal settlement and not back pay and it loads with missing information.  Need this fixed or I can't file.  Help.

A lawsuit settlement that does not include payment for back wages should be reported as other income.

You may have to delete the entry and start over.  You are able to remove the form by:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Tax Tools.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Click on Delete a form.
  • Find the form listed and click Delete to the right.

Follow the steps below to report the IRS form 1099-NEC as other income.

  • Select Federal from the left side menu.
  • Click on Wages & Income.
  • Scroll down to Less Common Income.  Click Show more.
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right of Miscellaneous income….
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right of Other reportable income.
  • At the screen Other Taxable Income enter a description.

The entry will be reported:

  • on line 8z of Schedule 1 of the Federal 1040 tax return, and
  • on line 8 of the Federal 1040 tax return.

View the entries at Tax Tools / Print Center / Print, save or preview this year's return / Include government and TurboTax worksheets.
