It's a joke honestly. They finalized the changes to the form already (the IRS) - it says January 2023 it was finalized - so sometime in the last 12 days. The draft was out in November. I guarantee competitors will have their software updated in the next few days if they don't already. It shouldn't take 5 weeks to update the software for a change to an existing form. Hopefully, it's TurboTax setting expectations and it's sooner, but I'm not holding my breath. Thankfully this is the last year most of us will need to use it.
@Jedi4380 If you do not want to use the TurboTax software because a form is not available you can use one of the other Free software programs on the IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-sets-january-23-as-official-start-to-2023-tax-filing-season-more-he...
IRS Free File will open January 13 when participating providers will accept completed returns and hold them until they can be filed electronically with the IRS. Many commercial tax preparation software companies and tax professionals will also be accepting and preparing tax returns before January 23 to submit the returns when the IRS systems open.
The IRS's Free File program, available only at IRS.gov, allows taxpayers who made $73,000 or less in 2022 to file their taxes electronically for free using brand-name software provided by commercial tax filing companies. Free File Fillable forms, a part of this effort, is available to any income level and provides free electronic forms that people fill out and file themselves also at no cost.
@DoninGA I'm aware of what's out there. My Dad was a corporate accountant for 30 years and I've done my own taxes since I first had a job over 20 years ago. I cannot use the free file software because I have a complicated return (Itemization, Investments, LLC and W2 income, etc.). If this wasn't the last year of this form for me, I'd probably be buying a Drake Software pay-per-return license for $345 and calling it a day. I'm not directing this at you, I'm directing this at TurboTax and Intuit. I manage Software Development teams for a consulting organization for a living and have worked with large tax software companies before (not TurboTax though) and changes don't typically take this long.
You must understand there are hundreds of forms that need to be updated each tax year and these cannot be done until the IRS issues the electronic specs which take longer than the paper forms you can get online. And the DIY programs work on the most common forms first so most of the filers can file early. So even though you think the 8915-F should be done first the reality is it doesn't rank that high on the list so patience will be needed until the tech team gets it updated, tested and approved by the IRS and finally opened for use. Not even my professional program is fully functional yet so the DIY programs are not the only ones delayed by the IRS processes.
Ok TurboTax why is this the 3rd year and this form 8915f isn't available yet now it pushed until 3/2/23 first it was 2/16, then 2/23, now 3/2 come on it cant be that different from last year.
