What tax year are you working on? W-2's have not been sent for 2020--are you working on your 2019 return?
Careful. Check to see if you put all of the W-2 earnings from both spouses under only one of your names. That is the most common reason for this user error. When you enter your income you have to make sure you pay attention on the screens for W-2's and enter each spouse's income under the right name. If you put it all under one name it results in a bigger refund which the IRS will send you a nasty letter about in about a year. They will want that money back with interest.
Look at the box 4's of your W-2's and see how much it all adds up to. If ONE person had more than
$8239.80 for 2019 it would be excess Social Security withheld.
I always have a sneak peak at what I'll get when I file in February. I'm doing that now for 2020. And my wife has 0 income so that can't be it. I really can't figure how the system thinks I overpaid when only 1800 was paid for the year.
Maybe it'll change when I have my w2 but right now something is off. Even if my w2 for 2019 and 2020 was added up it wouldn't be over the max cap, close but not over it.
Clearly something is way off then. There are a lot of updates still to come, and you will not really have your W-2 until sometime in January. Wait for the updates and your W-2 and re-visit that section later.
LOOK at what you entered in the W-2 box 12 section and boxes 3 & 4 ... chances are that is where your error is. For purposes of estimating leave all those boxes BLANK and see if that helps.
