What do you mean by "disability retirement?' Do you mean you are receiving Social Security Disability benefits? Or something else? Did you get a SSA1099? Or some other tax document?
If your disability is non-taxable, you may not have a filing requirement (see link for requirements). Who pays you the disability income? Did you receive any tax forms? How (or if) you proceed is dependent on the type of income and tax forms you received.
Disability benefits you receive from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) aren't taxable and don't need to be reported on your return. However, Military Disability Retirement pay could be taxable if reported on form 1099-R. Generally, Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) aren't taxable unless you have substantial additional income (more than $25,000 for an individual or $32,000 for married filers).
Please see Is Disability Income Taxable? for more information on disability income.
By "disability" retirement, I mean a disability retirement. No, I am not receiving any SSA income. I was deemed disabled from performing my previous duties for the federal government and was placed on a disability retirement. Since a disability retirement is completely different from a regular retirement, and TurboTax does not address this type of retirement, I am flummoxed as to how to proceed. I also prefer NOT to pay someone else to do my taxes which I have done for the past 17 years.
My disability retirement is paid by the OPM branch of the federal government. I do know my disability retirement is taxable by the federal government, but not the state I live in. I am receiving a federal (non-military) disability retirement (non SSDI). I saw no mention of this very early in my TurboTax attempt at completing my taxes, hence my question.
@Anonymous Did you receive a CSA-1099-R for the retirement income you received in 2022?
The outer portion of the "envelope" I received contains the phrase, "2022 CSA FORM 1099R," then directly below that, in red, it states, "IMPORTANT TAX DOCUMENT ENCLOSED."
However, on the actually "[s]tatement of annuity paid" it states, "Form: 1099-R."
@Anonymous Then it is a CSA-1099-R. Follow this procedure to enter the form in TurboTax -
Online editions -
Enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R
On the screen Did you get a 1099-R in 2022? Click on Yes
On the next screen click on Continue
On the screen Let's import your tax info Click on Change how I enter my form
On the screen How do you want to add your 1099‑R? Click on Type it in myself
On the screen Who gave you a 1099-R? select the type of 1099-R you received and Continue
I appreciate your responses, however you simply repeated what was displayed in the "Where do I enter my 1099-R?," when 1099-R is entered into the search box.
I did so and there is no "Jump to 1099-r" selectable link anywhere on the page that I could find. If you could kindly advise me where that link is that would be great.
Thanks.
@Anonymous If you have typed in 1099-r in the Search box and then press Enter, the Jump to 1099-R link should be displayed.
Then use this procedure -
Click on Federal on the left side of the online program screen
Click on Wages & Income
Click on Add Income or scroll down the page
On Retirement Plans and Social Security click on Show more
On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) click on Start or Revisit
Follow the interview and use the Change how I enter my form and the Type it in myself links.
When "1099-R" is typed into the search box and entered, there is no "Jump to 1099-r" nor any "Federal" displaying.
Additionally, would you be so kind as to explain exactly where the "online program screen" is located.
Thanks.
Assuming you are using the TurboTax online editions for your 2022 tax return, see Screenshot -
After several, separate discussions with TurboTax "help" I was finally able to locate CSA 1099-R, which is what I needed.
After manually entering my "federal" return information I completed the "state" return information only to be advised by TurboTax I OWED the state a substantial amount, and was asked if I would get this paid by April 18. The only problem with that is my state does not tax federal retirement. The "help" I was speaking with advised me to contact the IRS, which I am going to do as soon as the weekend is over.
I can't wait to here the IRS advise me there is nothing they can do since it is a TurboTax issue. My guess is I am done attempting to use TurboTax to submit my tax returns since it is in gross error for my scenario.
User beware.
