I downloaded financial info, including a 1099R, into TurboTax. I encountered two different problems. First, the 1099R from Fidelity Investments did not convey the fact that my RMD was fully a QCD. So I would be paying taxes on the RMD, even though it was equal to the QCD.
Second, we had purchased US Treasury Bonds through Fidelity and had paid accrued interest to the sellers of the Bonds. That info was not transferred to TurboTax. Again we would be paying more tax than we owed. I paid $60 to get extra help. During my conversation, it became apparent the only way to resolve the dilemmas.
I deleted the downloaded files from Fidelity. Then I manually entered the data from my 1099R, including a provision for listing the QCD. Then I manually entered the Interest from our joint Fidelity account - including accrued interest. Then manually entered dividends. Finally I downloaded only the Stock and Bond purchases and sales.
Bottom line: It works, but this will be the last time I use TurboTax, after using it for over 20 years.
I just started doing my taxes - same thing for 10 years. But on the 1099-R screen it has buttons that say "needs review" They aren't active. I have tried entering manually - ALL the info that has normally been pre-populated from previous years. AND now they are asking when this annuity started - how old was I etc. This is my deceased husband's government pension. And I have 2 other repeat annuities to enter with the same issue - 1099-R What is up?!?!?
Needs review button does not go away.
I have always been able to just update the new year's info - not all that other information.
It is February 6 today and I can't enter my 1099-R information as per usual. If it was fixed, it is not fixed for me.
@ordellep Have you updated your TurboTax software to the latest release?

Used TT for years This version - Problem trying to enter 1099-R Menu shows "review needed" but cannot click on it. No way to review entry without deleting it and starting over from scratch
"Needs review" isn't just an issue with 1099R!
There's a whole thread started by Dude3145 on how it's causing problem for DOZENS of people with a business, in Home and Biz 2024 edition.
Turbotax Home and Business 2024.
Business Income and Expenses>
Profit and Loss from Business 2024........ 'Needs Review.' >
It just isn't going away for any of us, no matter how many times we update etc.
Accuracy checks tell us everything is accurate, yet "Needs Review" will not go away.
You can click on your 1099-R entry to edit it.
Go to Income > I'll choose what I work on > scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security > Update/Review.
If you're using TurboTax Online, close the program, clear your Cache and Cookies and return to the Income section.
I get the same issue as of today (3-5-2025).
TurbotTax 1099-R form input screen has the following error message:
"State distribution amount can't be blank and can't be less than state tax withheld.".
I called TurboTax support: 800-446-8848. They are aware of the issue and gave me a case number.
They stated I'd be emailed when issue is resolved in 24-48 hrs....I hope the timeline is correct on the resolution.
Back in the middle of Feb 2025 I took the advice of several people and my e-filed state tax went right through and I got my refund pretty quick. Just enter the same amount that is in box 1and enter it yourself in box 16.
I have deleted and re-entered the form several times without success. The Needs Review still remains. I can proceed through the return but cannot actually file because it asks for the review again at the end. So frustrating!
On Form 1099R, when you enter any number larger than 0 in box 14 (State tax withheld), TurboTax marks it as an error, with the following message:
"Form 1099-R (NATIONAL FINANCIAL SERVICES LLC): Box 14a For electronic filing, New York State withholdings can not be greater than or equal to gross distribution or state distribution." (in box 1)
And you cannot e-file with this error. The program suggests that you mail in your return. When will this error be fixed?
@VL07 Delete the Form 1099-R and then re-enter manually so this will clear the error.
when entering 1099R info, turbo ask how much of contribution was for insurance premium. I've entered this over and over. It keeps going to needs review and asking again! I've deleted and manually entered several times but always get Needs Review message. HELP
