I’ve just filed jointly, I am the chief earner but when the pdf came back it lists my wife as unemployed? And doesn’t show the split earnings? Only the total we made?

A joint return never breaks down the income "per spouse"-----a joint tax return combines all of the income from both spouses.   Not sure what you mean by "it lists my wife as unemployed."   Did you enter all of the income under only your own name?    When you prepare a joint return, the income screens give you spots to enter the income by spouse name---even though all that income will be combined on the Form 1040.  Did you enter your wife's W-2 under her name?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I put in everything the TurboTax asked me for.  She had her own W2 and earnings of course so I filled in the boxes.  I made about $88000 she made about $14000 and the employer took hardly any tax from her.  Our combined was $103000 with $4000 claimed for the kids. So we have had to pay $1506.
does this make sense?  So do I have to amend her as being ‘employed’ now?  If so is it the 1040x form?

thanks for your advice it’s our first time filing in the US were from the UK.

I still cannot fathom where you are seeing something that says your wife was "unemployed"-----where are you seeing that?   EXACTLY---where?

Does it say unemployed for occupation at the bottom of the 1040 by the signature boxes?  That's not important.  It's not used for anything.

Where it says ‘sign here’. It shows my name, where I sign and then ‘your occupation’ Registered Nurse’

then my wife’s name, where she signs then ‘spouses occupation’ as ‘Unemployed’

Yes it does, wow that’s a relief!  So I will just leave it alone then.  Thanks so much

Yes it just for statistical reasons.  You can enter anything you want.  I wonder if you typed "unemployment" or left it blank?

I was very careful to answer correctly, I dunno what happened well at least it’s not important it seems. Thank you so much!

Oh---"occupation?"    Do not worry about that.  It has no effect whatsoever on your refund or tax due.  The IRS only uses occupation for statistics.

When you prepare taxes next year, you can change it to something you are more comfortable with.

You just edit your spouse's information on the My Info tab, and there is a place to enter/correct her occupation as you go thru the information about her Name, SSN, BDate etc..
