I assume that the refund from Colorado state was less than what your 2015 Colorado income tax return indicated.  That certainly happens if the state taxing authorities change something in your income tax return which, in turn affects your refund.

For purposes of your 2016 income tax return you need to enter the actual refund.

You also need to remember that, many times, the $$ that came back to your pocket is not the Federally taxable $$ that transfer into the 2016 Federal tax return.  It may not be line 66 of the 2015 CO Form 104.

1)Your Use Tax $$ assessed on the Form 104 are not an income tax, and must be added back.

2) Also, any checkoff donations (lines 50-to-63 of the form 104) are not considered.  (But the software should put those donations in the charity section of the new Federal 2016 tax form you are preparing now )

Looking at the 2015 Colorado Form 104, from what I can see, the CO refund $amount that TTX should transfer from your 2015 CO tax file, and into the 2016 Federal forms should be Lines 48 + 30 + 33.....(and I think minus line 46).

Someone with more experience with the CO refund transfer might be able to correct something I'm missing.   Many times, you can wait for your form 1099-G from the state in January if you don't trust the TTX number....and use that $$ amount, (but some states don't mail that out anymore and you have to get it from the state's own website)
