How do I report a stock sale when I don't have a 1099-B?

You should try to get a copy of the 1099-B.  However, it is not required to enter the stock sale and associated capital gains.  Use the instructions in the link below and when asked if you received a 1099-B, answer NO.

Form 1099-B (Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions) reports the sale of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other securities.   Here's where you enter or import your 1099-B (even if you did not get one) in TurboTax:

  1. Open (continue) your return if it isn't already open.
  2. In TurboTax, search for 1099-B and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you sell stocks, mutual funds, bonds, or other investments in 2019?
    • If you see Here's the info we have for these investment sales, select Add More Sales.
  4. Answer NO to Did you get a 1099-B or brokerage statement for these sales?  Or answer YES if you want to try to import it.
  5. Follow the instructions.

box category C or F on Form 8949 is for stock transactions for which you don't have a 1099-B.

This is not common. Losing your copy doesn't count as no 1099-B since they are also supplied to the IRS.

why no 1099-B? did you sell to a related party at a loss? in such a case the loss wouldn't be allowed.

How do I report a stock sale when I don't have a 1099-B?

Trying to report a private sale of stock, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get past screen which requires a name for the "Form 1099".   Older--2019 posts--seem to point to a way around that input by answering "No" to whether you received a Form 1099,

Anyone know how to input a private stock sale with no Form 1099-B?

To enter the information without a 1099-B:

  • In TurboTax, click on Wages and Income
  • Scroll down to Investment Income
  • Choose Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other and select Start or Update
  • The first screen will ask if you sold any investments during the year, answer yes
  • Did you get a 1099-B or a brokerage statement for these sales? Answer No
  • Tell us about the sale, Click I'll enter one sale at a time
  • The drop-down boxes can be filled out with the details of the stock sale

Here is an example of what you will see from a short-term sale without a 1099-B:

Thank you, PattiF; does that path only work on the first sign in and initial interview?    I can't seem to get to those options after the initial questionnaire screening.

I'm trying to avoid "starting over" since a lot of data has been input and imported.

I found the path:

Search for Investment Sales

Jump to the link:    "jump to investment sales"

From there, you can enter "Investment Sales" and add as many non-Form 1099 sales as appropriate.

Thank you, all.
