@shime If you did not receive a distribution or you did not roll over the retirement account to another retirement account, delete the Form 1099-R.

@caseyronnie4209    No...they seem to be saying either a)  that the information that they received from your employer indicated that box 17 was lower than what you reported with your CA tax filing. or b)  Box 17 might have been reported right by you, but that the FTB didn't actually receive that much CA state tax from the employer. ______________ Check the value you put into box 17 of that W-2 in the TTX software.  Occasionally people double-hit a key, or miss the decimal point and enter an erroneous number.   An error in box 17 can also occur if you uploaded a Picture or PDF of your W-2 form...and then failed to check to ensure that every entry was correct. ________________ If, in the end,  you don't agree with the FTB's change...then follow whatever procedure they should have outlined in their letter on how to challenge their "modification".

This error occurs because the Illinois state return is missing a two-letter state abbreviation on your Schedule IL-WIT. Go to the Federal Section:  Select Wages & Income. Review your W-2s and 1099s: For every form you entered, scroll down to the State and Local section (Boxes 15–17 on a W-2). Ensure that the "State" box has a 2-digit abbreviation (e.g., IL, MO, WI).   Go to the Illinois State Interview: Select State Taxes -> Illinois -> Edit/Update. Look for a section titled "Income Tax Withheld" or "Review your Illinois Withholding." TurboTax will show a list of your employers/payers. Click Edit on each one. Make sure there is an "IL" in the state field for every entry that shows Illinois withholding.

Even if the IRS doesn’t require the form, TurboTax tends to include it because:   It documents the calculation of your investment interest deduction It ensures the deduction is properly limited (or not limited) It avoids any ambiguity if the IRS reviews your return TurboTax errs on the side of showing the math. As long as the deduction on your Schedule A, Line 9 is correct, having the extra form doesn't hurt your return or increase your audit risk—it’s usually just the software being "extra thorough" to ensure you receive the deduction.

@hoskbel wrote: I received a small signing bonus last year from a job that I will start in the fall of this year.  I received a 1099-NEC but I was not an independent contractor or employee of the company when the bonus was paid.  TurboTax keeps directing me to complete Schedule C; however, I do not have a business.  Should the signing bonus be reported as "other income" since I am not an employee or independent contractor?  I have reviewed the IRS guidance but it seems unclear, so please advise. Thanks. The answer is exactly the same as in the reply just above yours (did you read the thread before posting?).  Except update the year.   A sign on bonus should be reported on a W-2 as wages, and should be subject to income tax and employment tax withholding, because it is compensation for work performed, even though that work will be in the future.   There is a way to fix this in Turbotax, using either form SS-8 or a substitute W-2 form, depending on when the bonus was paid.  If the bonus was paid in 2023 and the employee started work in 2023 and recieved a w-2, then use form 8919 with code H.   If the bonus was paid in 2022 but the employee started work in 2023 and did not receive a W-2 for 2022, use form 4852 substitute W-2 form.   (However, in either case, first contact the employer and ask them to issue a corrected W-2.  Give them the chance to fix the mistake.)   In this case, you will use a substitute W-2 form, you should expect to pay 7.65% social security and Medicare but not 15% self-employment tax.  But contact the employer first.

I understand and you are correct. This was not issued as self employment or as income for an employee. However, it is considered as though you were an employee when you received it since you will be working in the fall for this employer.   First delete the Form 1099-NEC and keep it with your tax files. Use the link below for your version of TurboTax to delete a form. If you're using TurboTax Online software and need to delete a form, click here. If you're using TurboTax Desktop software and need to delete a form, click here. Next, enter the income using the steps below.   TurboTax will help you fill out a substitute w-2.  You will use the employer information from your 1099-NEC. How to fill out a substitute W-2 (Form 4852) Go through the W-2 entry section and enter the information from your last paystub. On the follow-up pages look for the page titled "Do any of these uncommon situations apply to this W-2?" Select "Substitute form - I didn't get a W-2 from my employer and need to complete a substitute form." This will take you through the steps to complete the Form 4852 so you can file your return. Continue to follow the screens and enter all requested information. @hoskbel  [Edited: 04/13/2026 | 6:19 AM PST]

What state are you working on?   Sounds like something got stuck. You can try these things:   Log Out Completely: Before doing anything else, click Sign Out in the TurboTax menu. Clear Cache and Cookies: This removes old, "corrupted" data that might be confusing the website. Use an Incognito (Private) Window: This is the most effective "quick fix" because it launches the browser without any saved history or extensions (like AdBlockers) that often interfere with tax forms. Check Pop-up Blockers: TurboTax often opens forms (like the 1099 PDF) or payment windows in a separate pop-up. Look at the right side of your address bar for a small icon with a "red X"—click it and select "Always allow pop-ups from Intuit." Restart the Browser: Close all open windows of your browser entirely and then reopen it.   Most TurboTax errors happen because the browser is trying to use an old "session" from a previous visit. By clearing the cache or using Incognito mode, you force the browser to establish a brand-new, secure connection with the Intuit servers.
