As a software engineer, I believed there is a bug in the Turtotax integration with Capital One. Sadly the issue is never fixed (multiple Reddit post complained this as well).

In TurboTax Form 1040, the checkbox stating that my main home was in the U.S. for more than half of 2025 appears to be marked. However, I cannot find any option in Personal Info or other sections to modify or uncheck it. My state of residence for the entire year 2025 is a foreign country, and my mailing address is in India. Since my main home was not in the U.S., I am unsure why this box is selected or how to correct it.

@RobertB4444 Thank you again — I really appreciate your help. I have one more question about the “Other deductions” field in the 199A section. My K-1 Box 13 shows code H = 247 on the main K-1, and the supplemental information also shows 13AE = 4, but TurboTax only gives me one box for “Other deductions.” Which amount should go in that box, if any? I just want to be careful not to enter the wrong Box 13 amount or double count anything. Thank you!

Hi, TurboTax Support Team, Below is a summary of my situation and the specific questions. Background: I was employed as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University at Buffalo (UB), New York State, under the SUNY Research Foundation from December 2020 to January 2024. After leaving the U.S. in January 2024, I moved back to my country. I am currently a faculty member at a university in my country. I have consistently filed my tax returns through 2025 (for the 2024 tax year) using the W-2 provided by UB’s HR department. Current Financial Status in the U.S. (2025): Bank Accounts: I still maintain a bank account and a retirement account. Investments: I do not have any active investments in the U.S. 2025 Income: I earned $1.19 in interest income from my bank account in 2025. There were no distributions or changes to my retirement account. Others: In late 2025, I received a $200 inflation relief check from the New York State government. Residency: I have been a non-resident for tax purposes since January 2024. Since then, my only visits to the U.S. have been for short trips (2-3 weeks each) under ESTA. My Questions: Am I required to file a U.S. federal or state tax return in 2026 for the 2025 tax year? Since I had no employment income in the U.S. during 2025, I assume no W-2 will be issued. Could you confirm if this is correct, or if I should still contact UB HR for any documentation? Does TurboTax offer tax filing services for my specific case? Given my non-resident status since early 2024, which tax forms should be used if I am indeed required to file? Thank you in advance for your help.

ok got it. according to Turkish tax office it is theirs to tax. So then I will go to form 1116 and claim this from my US income yes? and i can only claim up to my US tax liability, if my Turkish tax was higher right? The other software I used while doing taxes, with my foreign address (so the software knows I am expat because it is for expats anyway), didn't even bring up form 1116, when i entered my US IRA withdrawal 1099R and I didn't have any other income that triggered 1116 in their system. But with Turbotax I can do it if I am in same situation? And in 1116 even if there may not be a dedicated place to enter US IRA withdrawal, can I describe a field as I want manually to say US Ira withdrawal tax paid to Turkiye and write my Turkish tax there?

For now I am renting while I can save up a down payment for a replacement vehicle as all of the insurance payments were sent straight to the loan company.

Yes, I guess that's what was expected. Given that no tax return was filed or extension requested by April 15, 2025, a substitute Form 1099-R with code J in box 7 is appropriate as previously discussed. Your Roth IRA contribution basis, including the excess contribution, should be more than the amount distributed, so the calculation on Form 8606 Part III should result in the distribution being a nontaxable distribution of contribution basis. Make sure that you have continued past the page that lists the Forms 1099-R that you have entered and confirm that TurboTax has the correct value for your Roth IRA contribution basis.

It would have been better to raise the price TurboTax to cover R&D of ItsDeductible, then to just drop it. Someone at Intuit is going to get fired over this for being short sighted and thinking purely about margins. Once a customer walks away, it becomes 10x harder to get them back. The cost of losing customer trust now and in the future.
