Since you are a member of the military and are on active duty, file your taxes using your state of legal residence (Home of Record), even though you are not currently living there. In TurboTax Online, click on My Info on the left panel or Personal Info in TurboTax Desktop, to ensure you have indicated you are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. This will also trigger additional questions for you to answer, which will help guide you in completing your tax return. Note: If you only had military pay, you generally do not need to file a return for the state where you were stationed. However, if you are stationed in a state with an income tax and you had non-military income, you may need to file a Non-Resident Return for that state. Also, some states have Active Duty Exemptions, while others have no income tax. If your Home of Record is a state with no income tax, you don't file a state return at all.

If TurboTax asks for a "Digital Asset Name" when importing many transactions from Cointracker's Capital Asset Worksheet, it means some transactions lack proper identification of the digital cryptocurrency asset involved. To fix this, review the transactions flagged by TurboTax and provide the missing asset names. You can: 1. Use the "Add a missing date, time, or amount" section inside TurboTax to edit each transaction. 2. Expand the "Needs review" panel to find transactions missing the digital asset name. 3. Enter the correct digital asset name for each transaction as shown in your Cointracker worksheet or wallet. 4. If many transactions need fixes, use TurboTax's Bulk Edit feature to update multiple entries at once. This ensures TurboTax can accurately calculate your cost basis and gains for each digital asset transaction.

This is insane having to use this new tool that won't allow you to add everything up and make it easy to donate to charities, The fact that this was removed and replaced with a search that can't even find a t-shirt is ridiculous. This is going to take hours. I would pay if it gave me an option to save all this time

To complete and file a 2023 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the 2023 desktop editions from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
A 2023 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed using TurboTax.

You are subject to tax at the ordinary income rate for withdrawals from your 401k, but you are not subject to the 10% early withdrawal penalty after age 59 1/2.
A 401k plan is a tax-deferred plan, meaning you are not taxed at the time of your original contributions (which help lower your AGI throughout the years, saving you money early-on on taxes), but you are taxed now at your ordinary income rate as you take those withdrawals of previously untaxed income. Your 401k contributions were also invested in various stocks and bonds over the years, which earned interest, dividends and appreciation in value, and that additional income is also taxed at your ordinary income rate.

As beneficiary, the responsibility to complete your father's RMD for 2024 moved to you, so it became part of your RMD. When TurboTax asks how much was required to be taken as RMD, simply enter the entire amount distributed and indicate that the entire amount applied to the RMD. Do not try to show them separately, there is no need to do so. As long as the year-of-death RMD is completed by the end of the following year, as was done in this case, there is no need to file a Form 5329 to report that the year-of-death RMD was taken late and request a waiver of the excess-accumulation penalty for that portion. The waiver is automatic under these circumstances.
