Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend. (If you do not save it as a pdf, the amended return will overwrite the original, and the original will be lost forever)
See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return -

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

I'm curious if the folks from this thread whose returns were eventually accepted have actually gotten refunds? More than a month later, my NYS refund is still "processing." I'm trying to figure out if the TurboTax bug that prevented us from filing is now affecting the processing of our returns.

Confirm the expense qualifies for the correct credit and year, and that it was entered in correctly.
Energy credits don’t usually increase your refund because most home energy credits are nonrefundable, meaning they can reduce your tax liability to $0 but won’t generate a refund by themselves. If your tax was already reduced by withholding, dependents, or other credits, there may be little or no tax left for the energy credit to offset. For more information, see Residential Clean Energy Credit

Hello, I am seeking assistance with a license activation issue (Error 603) for TurboTax Desktop 2024. I am moving my tax data from my old Windows 10 desktop computer to a new Windows 11 laptop. I have already installed the software on the new laptop, but when I enter my 16-digit license code ,I receive an error stating that the activation limit has been reached. I am the same user , I am simply switching hardware because Windows 10 is reaching its end of life. I need to have my license 'tokens' or activation count reset so I can finish my 2024 return and use the 'Auto-fill my return' feature on my new laptop. Can a moderator or agent please assist in resetting my activation count? My registered email is [email address removed]."

Sorry that it seems unfair, but entering a 1099G for unemployment benefits causes an upgrade to a paid version, because you need an extra schedule (Schedule 1) not supported by the Free Edition. The Free Edition can only be used when you have a very simple Form 1040 with no extra forms or schedules.
TurboTax Online: Important Details about Filing Simple Form 1040 Returns
If you have a simple Form 1040 return only (no forms or schedules except as needed to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit or student loan interest), you can file for free yourself with TurboTax Free Edition, or you can file with TurboTax Live Assisted Basic at the listed price. Roughly 37% of taxpayers are eligible.
Examples of situations included in a simple Form 1040 return (assuming no added tax complexity):
W-2 income
Interest, dividends or original issue discounts (1099-INT/1099-DIV/1099-OID) that don’t require filing a Schedule B
IRS standard deduction
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
Child Tax Credit (CTC)
Student loan interest deduction
Taxable qualified retirement plan distributions
Examples of situations not included in a simple Form 1040 return:
Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A, like charitable contributions, medical expenses, mortgage interest and state and local tax deductions
Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
Business or 1099-NEC income (often reported by those who are self-employed, gig workers or freelancers)
Stock sales (including crypto investments)
Income from rental property or property sales
Credits, deductions and income reported on other forms or schedules

I just ran into this with my parents' return. A week after I submitted their 1040-SR, the IRS sent them a letter saying their direct deposit information was incorrect. I thought it was a scam because I didn't provide any direct deposit information because I never do. At any rate, I had to create an IRS account for my 82yo father in order to enter the required information. BTW, if he had done nothing, he would have received a check in 6 weeks (per the IRS). If the IRS isn't issuing checks any longer, then why leave that option in TT for Federal? (Venting here, but I hate the assumption these days that everyone has a smart phone and/or computer, and that they can create and use online accounts as easy as younger, computer savvy people.)

You were covered by a family plan all year, so that is the most logical option. Your self plan may be considered a backup to the family plan.

What information is it asking for? The MacBook would be an asset. As you are walking through the questions, there is a place to select the type of asset, then you will select technology. You will need to enter the date of purchase, and the price you paid. It should then give you the option of taking the full depreciation or depreciating it over its useful life of 5 years.

No one can see your tax return. Look at your Form 1040 to see if there is an amount on line 6b. We have been seeing lots of users who make a mistake after entering their SSA1099. The screen right after you enter your SSA1099 asks if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025. If you skipped past that screen or answered incorrectly, your SS was not taxed correctly.

You’ve hit a security checkpoint in TurboTax. While the IRS accepts e-filing with a foreign address, TurboTax sometimes flags these addresses as a billing risk or identification mismatch, which can block your e-file.
The Power of Attorney (POA) is already set up, so your mother has the legal authority to sign and file for you. The next step is to get past the software’s address check.
If TurboTax is blocking you during the "Pay" or "Register" phase:
Go to Personal Info (or My Info).
Temporarily change your mailing address to your mother's U.S. address.
Go to the File section. This should now allow you to pay for the software and register your account using a U.S. address that matches a U.S. credit card. Your mother may need to use her card to pay for the product.
Once you have paid and are at the final filing process, Do not click "Transmit" yet.
Go back to Personal Info and change your address back to your Foreign Address.
Ensure you select "Foreign Country" from the "Type of Address" dropdown menu.
Return to the File section. TurboTax should now "remember" that you have already paid/registered, and it should allow you to proceed to the e-file transmission with the foreign address correctly populated on your Form 1040.

Hi, I submitted my 2025 federal tax return through TurboTax. The IRS processed it and deducted a penalty for not making a tax prepayment for the first quarter. I was self employed but not working, nor did I know I was going to be working, until the middle of the year, hence no payment in April. What did I or TurboTax do wrong and how can I recover the penalty? Thanks.
