Our Easy Extension website will allow you to file an extension online.  The extension is IRS Form 4868, and that is what you'll be signing and transmitting. Filing the Form 4868 does not transmit any other part of your tax return or any other forms.   You are asked to pay the balance you estimate will be due, as an extension is an extension of time to file your income tax return, it is not an extension of time to pay.

The refund date posted by TurboTax is only an estimate.   Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.   Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.   If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_...   After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.  I made a Roth IRA contribution of $7,000 in 2024.  At the end of the year I fell into the phaseout range and had an $1,120 excess contribution.  I removed that and the earnings of $398.      As expected, in early 2026 I received a 2025 1099-R reporting the full withdrawal and the taxable amount, however when I amended 2024 the $398 earnings increased my MAGI.  The new excess was $1,400.  So $280 more than I removed.  So, I was correctly assessed the 6% penalty on the $280 on the amended return.   my question involves the remaining $280 excess.  At this point I have to remove it, but believe I can do so without removing more earnings, thus no MAGI increase issue.   It’s now March 2026. I’m wondering if I should be requesting a removal of additional excess or an actual withdrawal of prinicipal.  And then how that gets reported so the 6% penalty stops running.  I believe I’ll have another 6% for 2025, but not after that.     So, if removed in 2026 will I get a 2026 1099-R next year (2027)?   And if so how do I report it?   Do I send in a separate 5329 or input to the 2027 taxes.  And if I request an actual distribution how does the IRS know it’s the $280 to cover the excess from 2024.   I assume no 10% penalty is assessed as it’s a Roth.     If I will get a 2026 1099-R to file next year can I create a substitute and report it this year, or should I wait? And how do I report it correctly?   File a 5329 now or include it in the tax return?  I apologize for the length but without all the info it would be hard to answer accurately.  Again, thank you in advance for any info you can provide.   I use TT premier desktop    Gina

If you're stuck in a section of the online software, try to exit and re-enter that section to clear the loop: select File from the left-hand side menu to proceed forward.   If that doesn't clear the loop, you can begin troubleshooting by following these steps:   First, begin logging out of the TurboTax platform you're using, Online or Desktop. If you are using TurboTax Online Check ‌your browser's settings. (Clear your Cache and Cookies) Here are the official instructions for the most popular browsers: Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox Microsoft Edge  Or, Try using a different web browser to login and complete your entries.  If you are using TurboTax Desktop Make sure the software is updated.  If you haven't rebooted your computer, please do. Check your firewall and antivirus settings. Make sure they aren't blocking any feature of the software.  ** If you are using the phone/tablet app, try changing to laptop/computer if possible. If you do not have access to a computer, switch to a web browser within your phone or tablet, and sign in from there.  **You might also want to uninstall and reinstall your desktop product (this has worked for some users). Make sure that you save the file and do a back up of your information (you do not want to lose any information). See: How do I back up my tax file in the TurboTax Desktop software?

Card Expired, so I have been trying to update. I am living in Portugal, but have accounts in the US. I have now tried two different US accounts (1 credit, 1 debit) and one Portuguese account (debit). I keep getting a "Whoops!" message after inputting all the info (although in the case of the Portuguese bank, I cannot enter an address because there are only fields for US addresses). I am beyond frustrated.

I have desktop 2025.  I e-filed and the IRS accepted my return several weeks ago.  As of Sunday morning, 3/8 the downloaded, desktop version for amended returns is not working.   When I open desktop version, confirm current version and updates, and click on the "Amend return" a blank return is opened and I cannot open my return.  I spent an Hr online and $60 for expert help.  Net, the suggestion is to wait another week.  UNBELIEVABLLY Poor communication, for weeks on this topic.  Wow.

The rental property depreciation area is available and working as expected. The form to claim depreciation is Form 4562.  You can see this Form when you preview your 1040, and scroll to Form 4562 (Go to Tax Tools on the left of your screen, then Print Center, select "Print, save or preview this year's return".) If you don't have any new additions, you can still see depreciation, it will be on Schedule E, line 18.   If you haven't yet entered asset information, you'll need to do that before you see this appear on the forms. You'll navigate to the rental property section and add an asset to claim depreciation.

I'm following the easy extension process on Turbotax, and it is asks if I lived abroad or was in the military, confirms address, that I am filing with a spouse. Then it asks for how i will pay my return, I've selected by check, and then it asks me to sign and transmit the returns. This seems wrong. I've done this every year because I get a late K1 and I don't remember a button to send my returns during the extension.

Another Tax expert had this to say. Is this not accurate in your opinion?   "Sometimes taxpayers may need or want to make a change after they have already timely filed their tax return with the IRS. This is not an unusual occurrence and there are a variety of reasons that can give rise to this situation. Individual or business taxpayers may experience a change in circumstances, may receive relevant information late, or may discover something was missed on their original filing. Rarely does the law provide taxpayers with opportunities for what basically amounts to a tax filing do-over of sorts. Depending on the timing and circumstances, taxpayers may have the remedy to file a superseding return. Read on to learn more before you timely file a corrective or revised return with the IRS.   The Difference Between Superseding Returns and Amended Returns Both superseding returns and amended returns can be filed to change or correct information after the taxpayer has already timely filed an original return. Despite this shared purpose, these are different types of returns that present unique considerations for taxpayers.   Generally, superseding returns are intended to replace or supersede (hence the name) a timely filed original return with a subsequent timely filed return. Superseding returns change items reported on an original return and must be timely filed before the original filing deadline, including extensions. The changes made by a superseding return are, in effect, incorporated into and relate back to the original return. Because it must be filed before the applicable deadline, a superseding return can only be filed within that limited window of time.   In contrast, an amended return changes items reported on an original return but is filed after the original filing deadline, including extensions. Generally, the deadline for refund claims is the later of either three years from the date the original return was filed or two years from the date the tax was paid. The filing of an amended return modifies the original filed return, and the IRS treats it as the taxpayer’s return of record. Whereas taxpayers file superseding returns using Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, amended returns are filed differently using Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Both types of returns can be filed electronically."
